Here are the new 2004 mixes of Alena's 'Turn It Around', plus the Sandler remixes! These are sure to be big this summer, already making it onto the playlists of Armin van Buuren, Judge Jules, Paul van Dyk, Dave Pearce, Above & Beyond and Johan Gielen...
Carlo Resoort was originally behind the Alena project and now hes used his 4 Strings guise to produce some new mixes for 2004. There are two vinyls reviewed here today - the first holds the DJ 4 Strings Instrumental Mix, the DJ 4 Strings Vocal Mix and the Full Vocal Mix. The second vinyl is home to the Sandler mixes - the Sandler Instrumental Mix and the Sandler Vocal mix.
:: 4 Strings - Turn It Around :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ042
A: DJ 4 Strings Instrumental Mix This mix begins strongly with a powerful kick backed by a good, tight percussion. The bass is soon to join in, providing more strength to the beginning of this track. The first break is where things start to happen. A melody begins to play on some taught stringy sounding synths. This is then succeeded by a much bigger, heavily reverbed trance synth with a nice coarseness to it. The track jumps back in with this catchy melody backed up with deeper rumbling bass. The synths and bass have a very 'outdoors' kind of feeling - they sound as if they're being played outside at a large festival so create an excellent mood and overall feel! There is a quiet section which consists soley of beat and percussion before a second breakdown. A slightly different melody comes in here, stabbing offbeat notes played by a subtly different sounding synth. A nice way to round off this classy piece.
B1: DJ 4 Strings Vocal Mix This vocal mix is the same as the DJ 4 Strings Instrumental Mix, other than some echoey vocals during the intro and break sections and also some stronger vocal elements during the two breakdowns. Theres a nice choice here - a chance to enjoy the track with or without vocals.
B2: Full Vocal Mix The Full Vocal Mix adopts the same structure as the first two mixes but has quite a different sound. It begins abruptly with a quieter, punchier kick and some classic 4 Strings style higher pitched rolling bass. The percussion evolves and we're soon hearing the full 'Turn It Around' vocals. The vocals continue and are backed by more percussion and a subtle layer of synths in the background. The backing synths and the flowing voice gives the track a nice dreamy feel to it. Now, the track basically repeats with the slight vocal build up to a break and then more synth backed vocals to take you to the end of the track. This one will be big for the vocal trance fans out there.
:: 4 Strings - Turn It Around (The Sandler Remixes) :: Liquid Recordings :: LQ043
A: Sandler Instrumental Mix The first mix from Sandler begins with a clean beat backed up by a veritable barrage of percussion of gurgling sfx to listen to. This breaks smoothly into something more rounded, fuelled along by a nice rolling bass and topped off with synth ambience in the background. As the track progresses, you notice more synth rising from below, creating some eerie and sustained but really nice sounds. The break introduces Sandler's version of the melody, which is simplistic yet well thought out - it sounds like lone notes echoed over and over, but when the track drops back in, the notes work perfectly with the thick synth and bass backing. A short rest section preceeds the final breakdown, which builds up as before and treats us to a final section of all those lush sounds. Lovely.
AA: Sandler Vocal Mix Sandler's vocal mix is the same as his instrumental mix, but has carefully sampled 'Turn It Around' vocals blended in during key moments and also throughout the breakdown sections. Its well crafted and put together nicely - a less obvious vocal treat which doesn't lack those lush synthy sounds.
Conclusion:
What a lot of choice! I've enjoyed all mixes of this one. The DJ 4 Strings Instrumental and Vocal mixes are big and chunky, possessing a strong sound and powerful feel. The Full Vocal Mix is for vocal enthusiasts only, unsurprisingly enough. The Sandler Remixes are a wonderful take on this track - big synthy sounds blended well together with melody and bass. Plus some extra vocal hits on the vocal mix! One for the summer, whetever mix you play!
