The latest A State Of Trance release sees heavyweight trance producer M.I.K.E. with a new production under an alias which he hasn't used since the year 2000 - Absolute...
M.I.K.E. needs no introduction - with his vast amount of alias and releases, his reputation precedes him. Now, he debuts on the A state Of Trance label with his new piece, 'New Horizon'.
:: Absolute - New Horizon :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT023
A: Original Mix 'New Horizon begins with a snappy kick backed by some thick, very electronic sounding synths. A typical M.I.K.E. offbeat hihat serves as a mini intro for the deep, rolling bass, which again possesses that unmistakable M.I.K.E. sound. Some more dreamier sounding synths come in with long sustained notes to move the track along and add some progression into the mix. The breakdown begins with a long deep synth which fades and gives way to the beginning of the main melody. Up to this point, nothing really special stands out of this track, but for trance lovers out there this melody should help to pick things up. It has a mysterious sound to it and flows smoothly. After the track drops back in, the bass joins in, changing with each section of the melody, which sounds quite nice. From here, the melody plays through a few times and leads to a final break which just drops the beat and bass, kicking back in withuot as many synths and then leading to a close with some electronic sounds on the way. Above average, but M.I.K.E. insists on staying with the same instruments over and over, which may become tedious to some.
B: Electrique Remix The same snappy kick is present here, helped along initially by some sfx and hissy percussion. The bass and backing synths drop in soon after this. The bass is a bit jumpier than before and has a much more electronic feel to it. As the track progresses, synths fill up empty space in the background and there are a lot of different electronic sfx present. The breakdown is home to just these ambient synths until some jittery chords are introduced. These continue as the track comes back in, along with the very electronic bass and eerie synths coasting along in the background. The track continue like this, though another short break and then on towards the end of the track. Very progressive, but its beauty lies in the fact that there are many different sounds making up the track, providing a full sound and a lot to listen to, which may be of interest to some of the more progressive people in the audience.
Conclusion:
Two above average tracks here. The Original Mix suffers from the fact that the same old M.I.K.E. instruments are used, but has a nice melody. The Electrique Mix is heavily progressive yet can be interesting to listen to - not everybodys cup of tea though. Just scrapes a 7.
