Amid much fanfare, Above & Beyond have fast become one of the premier production outfits in the dance world in 2004. With huge support from the likes of Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, and other dance royalty, Above & Beyond's latest release has also received the added benefit of featuring a mix by the masterful Gabriel & Dresden. However, when all is said and done, can it live up to the massive hype?
Tiësto has called them "genre-defining". No One on Earth's A-Side Original Mix and the B-Side Gabriel & Dresden mix have been picked as Armin van Buuren's record of the week. At this point, I probably don't need to tell you that this is true anthem material.

The A-Side original mix is vocal trance at its best. Serene, floating vocals provided by the sublime Zoe Johnston combine with a subtle but energetic backing in the form of uplifting synths that perfectly mesh with the vocals, producing what is an intoxicating effect. Deep string chords add a beauty and depth to the song, capped by superb piano strikes that help to deepen the trance. Magical stuff, and a wonderful track that you will probably hear more of than you care to in the coming months.
Gabriel & Dresden, known more for the deeper side of vocal trance, have supplied a fine mix that complements the original well. The duo add sharper synth sounds that give the song a richer, brooding atmosphere to it. Less euphoric, this mix is more reflective but less poignant than the original. All and all a fine mix that is already a fixture in Paul van Dyk's latest mix sets.
Conclusion:
A wonderful effort with hauntingly beautiful vocals, the original mix is an outstanding vocal trance track that truly lives up to the hype. Gabriel & Dresden have provided a strong mix that is worthy of two producers of their stature, however, the abscene of the beautiful piano strikes and the other subtle production touches that make the first track the piece of work that it is are sadly absent here and as such it lacks the infectious beauty of the A-Side.
