The Filterheadz' latest offering to the ever evolving dancescene is their newest track 'Yimanya'. The two brothers from Belgium have released quite a few succesful productions in the past, all having that distinctive and original style... Did they do it again?
The 'Filterheadz' guise has been brought to life by the Belgian brothers Bert and Maarten Wilmaers. They have remixed artists like DJ Tiësto vs. Junkie XL, Ralphie B and Minimalistix, and have had two single releases before: 'The One Who Got Caught' and 'The Rhythm / Protection'.
A-side: Original Mix First of all, when you take a closer look at the label, you can see that there is this small line of text saying 'Special thanks and love to Yimanya'. This is because Yimanya refers to a girl the Filterheadz boys met during one of their trips to South America! The track itself commences with a tight kick, some bongo's and a bit of crispy percussion. A slick clap gets added along the way guiding us right into the main bassline. This bassline isn't too deep, but does have this superb change in tones all the time, creating a very summerish vibe throughout the whole build-up. A first mini-break appears, treating us with the first real noticable synth: a repeating little melody that plays along with the bassline a bit, just until the tracks breaks again, this time to start off what the tune is all about: a tickling, almost cute sound, playing this immensely catchy melody. It doesn't vary too much, but it's very good nonetheless because it's being backed up by some chanting vocals which definitely contribute to the climax we're about to get: everything blends together, inducing an overall kind of 'happy' (in a good way) vibe. This is what summer is all about! After a while, the first synthline returns to bring us another moment of pleasure with a second break and climatic part: the vocals return once again, destined to tear up any festival ground in the coming months. When all this is done, the track slowly starts to build itself off, leaving the kick and bongo's alone in utter silence...
B-side: TDR Remix TDR is a moniker by Belgian based producer Tom de Ridder. Again, I took a closer look at the label, and noticed something again: 'Remix and additional production by TDR "Sitting Naked In His Hot Studio Box On A Pink 5 Dollar Ikea Seat". That's a funny way of producing isn't it? Let's cut to the chase: this remix starts off with a decent kick and some electro-ish sounds at the background. After about half a minute, the first sounds of the bassline come forward, playing the same notes as the line used in the Original Mix. More and more percs get added along the way, all sounding very smooth. A break enters, in which a first rhythm gets introduced, which plays along with the bassline a bit again. Everything goes on again, this time accompanied by some new tones at the background. The main break part consists of a mix of the synths we just heard, escorted by a slightly altered version of the main melody sound from the A-side mix. Parts of the vocals are hearable as well, though they aren't as dominant as they are in the other mix. All this repeats itself a few times more, just until we get to the build-off.
Conclusion:
The Original Mix is a Tune with a capital T! An addictive bassline, a soothing, summery melody and some groovy vocals make this tune one of thé summer anthems of 2004! The TDR mix is OK, but it doesn't add that much to the original to be honest. Though I must admit that the kind of electro-ish vibe that has been created throughout the mix has been done very nicely! All in all a neat release, be sure to pick it up on a sunny day!
