Orbital's ninth, and final album; will it live up to the expectiations of those who have followed their 15+ years in the Electronica industry? Will they end with a bang, or a bust?
Since I bought the Japanese edition of this CD, there is an extra track on track 2, titled Initiation. Since it's not available in most areas, I will review it last, to keep the tracklist in order for most listeners. It was available on Octane as well, so some fans probably already know this song
1: Transient - A bubbly, ambient track, with strings, and a nice synth that kicks in around 4 minutes into the song. A very peaceful opening track, and a great introduction to the album.
2: Pants - One of the dancier songs on the CD, Pant is a driving, forceful breakbeat number, with a great synth line. It starts off strong, and has one of the best buildups I've ever been privy to. It's one of my personal favorites on the album, probably because it appeals to my love for the newer style of Breakbeats so much.
3: Tunnel Vision - This track is a bit darker than Pants, and a little harsher. It's another dancey tune, with a lot of trancey elements, and a good bassline that tie the song together very well. It's a little slower, and without the beat, could almost be considered House.
4: Lost - A more chilled, relaxed experience. It reminds me of a track I would listen to while looking at a night sky. It has an ambient feel to it, but never really builds up into anything, and leaves you a bit wanting at the end.
5: You Lot - Builds up into a nice little string section around 1:45, that lasts for around 2 minutes. The vocals that come in around 2:30 are from The Second Coming, written by Russel T Davies, and fit in very well with the track. Around 3:30, the beat breaks, and the song can be heard in all it's glory. This song reminds me of Orbitals more recent work, possibly something off Middle of Nowhere.
6: Bath Time - It starts off with a very bubbley, happy saw, that sounds like something you might hear in a fairy tale. It's a very happy-go-lucky track, and almost like a break from Orbitals usually more serious, somber sound.
7: Acid Pants - "When the laugh track starts, then the fun starts!" The vocal repetition on this track was rather heavy...so heavy, in fact, that I think it detracts from the compilation overall. The actual production on the track isn't bad...it has an almost Goa feel to it, but those vocals really need to go.
8: Easy Serv - A relentlessly happy track, it sounds a bit like a wind chime set to a beat. It doesn't really build into anything, it's just a happy little piece of music.
9: One Perfect Sunrise - This is probably one of the most anticipated tracks on the album. I've heard people go as far as to say it's the next Halcyon. I wouldn't quite go that far, but I will say that this is one of the best songs I've heard from Orbital. The vocals, by Lisa Gerrard, have a haunting, ethereal quality about them, and have a feeling reminiscient of Gladiator. I would say this is also the best track on the CD, but comparing this track to Pants is like apples to oranges.
Extra Track: Initiation - One of the darker tracks I've heard from Orbital, this track has a haunting, almost gothic feel to it. It's a very deep, dark track, with a lot of substance to it. I enjoyed it very much, and am very glad that it was included on my copy of the disc.
Conclusion:
All-in-all, this CD is one of my favorites from Orbital. Naturally, it doesn't compare to the the Brown Album, or Snivilisation, but it's definately one of my favorites.
