Intrinsic releases another 12", this time it is the much hyped artist Nikola Gala. Many deejays are big fans of him and if John Digweed loves his records then he has to be good but does Nikola Gala live up to the hype?

Nikola Gala – Blue Impulse/Subterra

Intrinsic is a UK based house music label, run by Christian Lewis and Matthew Slater. Their records have received a lot of play in recent years from John Digweed, Pete Tong, Sasha and others. They are known for putting out solid house records and they are about to launch a breakbeat sub label in the fall of 2004. Nikola Gala is the newest signing to the Intrinsic stable and he is generally unknown to most that live outside of Greece. Nikola Gala is short for Nick Galatsopoloulos, who was born in 1980 and has become somewhat of a name in his homeland of Greece. He has deejayed in many places all over the globe but his productions are getting massive reviews from many in the music industry.

Nikola Gala – Blue Impulse/Subterra (Intrinsic 016)

A1. Blue Impulse
B1. Subterra

A1.Blue Impulse

This begins sharply with a banging bass line, which immediately catches your attention and in the background, we hear some subtle sound effects but they work well in the track. The track quickly starts to move into more driving house rather than the progressive sound that Gala is known for these days. “Blue Impulse” goes in this mold till about a minute and a half in, where a fierce groove joins the driving house sound and you get magic from then on. As you hear the song, you can’t help thinking that it would fit perfectly into a Sander Kleinenberg or John Digweed set and they are apparently both big fans of this record. You realize that Gala is such a talent with this song; it’s smartly crafted and well thought out. Around three and half minutes in, you think the song can’t get any better, but you would be dead wrong, it gains a beautiful riff that catches your attention, add the drive, the groove and this, you get aural bliss. I love this song; it’s more house than progressive house but why pigeon hole the song? It simply rocks and it continues like this to the very end. A brilliant track from Mr. Gala.

B1. Subterra

The flipside on this release is Subterra and it’s more of what you would expect from Mr. Gala. It’s far deeper than the Blue Impulse and far more progressive. The bass line is much slower but still solid and the track is very deep. Gala is one of the more innovative producers because the two tracks don’t sound the same and that’s rare with artists these days because most are making songs in the same mold with the same sound these days, just to sell more records. Subterra has more of a driving progressive nature, it’s not as obvious as the first track but do not overlook this track. Subterra is far more layered and far more complex, it makes great use of sound effects at times, coupled with the driving nature of the song, you have another stormer. This song is another one that would fit into John Digweed’s record box because of the deep driving nature of it.

Conclusion:
Gala will be an artist to watch in the future and don’t be surprised if he becomes a household name in the near future. Gala certainly has the talent and innovation to make it in the music business and with John Digweed loving his records; he is certainly going to go far. Blue Impulse is my favorite of the two sides because I simply love driving house and I feel that many producers and artists go for the popular sound, when really most deejays love to play driving house. Intrinsic has done it again with this gem, if you are a progressive deejay, be sure to pick this one up, its well worth the coin. Nikola Gala certainly lives up to the hype with this release.
