The latest release on ASOT is by Draft 2 Design and it carries the rather ornate name of 'Affection Over Reason'. Being the first solo production from the Draft 2 Design project, how does it fare...?
The pair behind Draft 2 Design are the same pair who are behind the Outback project, Jop Van Amelsfoort & Jim Hermsen, who are no stranger to the ASOT label. Draft 2 Design, however, has only performed 2 remixes in the past and now its time for the first full production under this alias.
Being an ASOT addict I noticed another first which is that this release has the same sleeve colour as the release which came before it, breaking the repeating sequence of colours that each consecutive ASOT release has adhered to so far.
:: Draft 2 Design - Affection Over Reason :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT025
A: Final Design This track begins with a long initial section, building on a basic kick and percussion with some staccato bass, some chilled and calming summery chords snapping away in the background and the beginnings of an electric guitar playing some nice long notes. You can tell that Outback are behind this due to the appearance of coarse and futuristic sfx hits and whooshes intertwined within the layers of the track. Once these solid foundations are laid, the track breaks off into its long breakdown section where those summery chords continue quietly but the main focus moves onto the electric guitar which develops into a slow but ongoing melody. It continues to evolve and changes the mood of the track completely - its melody becomes sincere and emotional, working with backing chords and some wonderful trancey synths sailing high above the rest of the other sounds. This is the kind of melody which sends shivers down your spine and it really does the long breakdown justice. The track kicks back in with the electric guitar in full flow, backed by the trance synths tapping out a repeating sequence of notes. Another small breakdown signals the beginning of the end, after which all melodic elements are dropped and the remaining layers are stripped off one by one until the end is reached.
B: Basic Draft The Basic Draft of 'Affection Over Reason' begins with ambience breaking into an orchestral introductory section, focussing mainly on various stringed instruments. This section plays for a short while, eventually breaking into the main melody, and then into a beat and a bassline in Outback's distinct taught sounding style - complete with coarse sfx to finish off the resemblance. What follows are two sections that build on the existing beat and bassline, separated by a small break which is used to introduce a nice background synth. This synth plays long sustained notes which bridge over to the beginnings of the main 'Affection Over Reason' melody. All of this slow building of sound leads to the main breakdown where ambience swells and grows into a slow, muted synth lead verse of the melody. The synth gains strength, changing into a much trancier sound. The emotional melody continues to play as a breakbeat emerges from the background, adding more character to this already diverse mix. Eventually the track emerges back into full flow - a well performed melodic section. This version of the track has a stronger feeling of sincerity to it due to the slow and deliberate placing of the melody. The production is topped off with the addition of some more synths which pave the way for a final breakbeat section, used to ease the track down a few levels and push it towards its end.
Conclusion:
A strong first production for the Draft 2 Design guise. The Basic Draft has a slow and sincere melodic pace with some alternative elements while the Final Design is more rounded up, confining the best melodies to the long break. Both very nice tracks.
