The latest from the rising trance superstars Smith & Pledger is the track 'Believe'. Its release date on the Anjunabeats label is looming - can Smith & Pledger pull it off once more...?
Oliver Smith and Mark Pledger have shot to the top of trance as producer duo Smith & Pledger. They've had winning collaborations with Matt Hardwick, more success with 'Forever' and done some cracking remixes to boot. It seems they may have done it again with their latest effort, 'Believe', which is due out on the 9th of September. On the vinyl you will find the Original Mix and a Smith & Pledger 2004 Remix.
:: Smith & Pledger - Believe :: Anjunabeats :: ANJ032
A: Smith & Pledger 2004 Remix Smith & Pledgers trance essence is present right from the word go here, with a succinct beat, wispy percussion and some trancey ambience layered in. Almost immediately layers of synth present themselves providing a great feeling early on in the track and allowing things to flow really smoothly. The first out of two breaks in this track comes about and gently introduces yet another synth part, playing smooth chords. Coupled with the previous synths playing their small melodic loops you are presented with a simply beautiful and inspiring sound. One final melody is introduced and this really tops things off perfectly. There are so many layers to this track - synth chords and several small melodies, the beat and percussion plus the perfect amount of bass. Smith & Pledger have combined all these elements into one to form a superb track that outlines perfectly the real essence of trance.
B: Original Mix The Original Mix of 'Believe' begins more traditionally with an intro of beats and a fair medley of percussion. The bassline that is introduced reminds me of the bassline in Veracocha's classic masterpiece 'Carte Blanche' - steady yet active. Some small sfx hits are used to introduce the lead melodic synth which plays small dabbles of notes backed up by small patches of a gentle backing synth, enticing you into the track. The first half of the first break is quiet, but it soon invites one of the melodic synths to bring its melodic loop out into the open and soon the rest of the track follows. Smooth backing pads, other less complicated synth driven melodic elements, a main synth lead - not overpowering, not too suppressed - and the right combination of beat and bass are again the order of the day here. This mix isn't as blended and melded together as the trance-soaked original, instead allowing each element a little more prominency.
Conclusion:
Wow. What a fantastic piece of trance! Smith & Pledger have out done themselves with this one - both mixes are simply excellent. The 2004 Remix is a masterpiece of trance which sounds gorgeous, while the Original Mix - which has the same quality blend of melodic elements to make the seemingly perfect melody - has a slightly more simplistic and hence more stable feel.
