TCR is ten years old in 2004 and to celebrate that fact, they are releasing special 10". This is the third release featuring a new Aussie artist and they brought it another Aussie on remix duty. Check it out!
Friendly – Fetish (TCR 10 Part 3)
TCR is at it again with another 10” release to celebrate their 10th anniversary. This is the third of the special 10” releases. Friendly is a relative newcomer to the breaks scene for some people, Friendly is an alias of Australian born, now living in London but he is known as Andrew Kornweibel to his friends. He was voted as “Best New Artist in Breaks” at the Oscars of the Breakbeat World (aka Breakspoll). Some say that he is destined for big things in the future but only time will tell, he has a new album on the way from Fat! Recordings. This is his debut on TCR and maybe there are more releases to come.
Friendy – Fetish (TCR 10 Part 3)
A1.Fetish (Original Mix) A2.Fetish (Smithmonger Remix)
A1.Fetish (Original Mix)
The song is blessed with nice sound effects based around a vocal that goes “how do you want me to do it”, which repeats. The song uses some weird sound effects like static from a television and uses what sounds like a phone at times. The bass line is very solid and the song is really catchy and hooks you in, very early, when the vocal is repeated. The only disappointment is that I expected the song to be much more dirty with a name like Fetish but we can’t have everything our own way. Friendly certainly knows how to make his tracks, most songs don’t grab your attention but this immediately grabs your attention and holds it for the entire tune, which most tracks fail to do. Top marks to Friendly for his debut track on TCR.
A2.Fetish (Smithmonger Remix)
TCR are known as very smart people and it always seems that Rennie Pilgrem who owns this label always seems to pick the right remixer for the job. It is hard to explain but all their remixes seem to fit in well but I guess I’ll never find out how he selects the remixer but I guess some things are better left untouched. So Smithmonger is drafted in for remix duty and for those who don’t know, he has been around the breaks scene for some time and he is based out of Australia. Some of you that are new to breaks, his work was used on James Lavelle’s GU023 CD2, with the track called “Vodka”. The song begins with a solid bass line, which is always a good thing, it makes use of some cool sound effects and uses more of an altered version of the vocal at times. This remix is a bit darker than the original mix but it works well just the same. The “Ohhhhh” is used more as a vocal in this remix. The vocal line gets repeated but it is stretched a bit more here with some quirky old style video game sound near the background. I have the same problem with this remix as I did with the original mix, I expected it to be far more dirty than the name suggested. The release here will make fans out of both versions, they should appeal to all types of breaks fans.
Conclusion:
I wished this was far dirtier but I can’t always have my wish. The original mix is a solid breakbeat tune that some described as the bastard love child of Donna Summer and George Clinton conceived in a Kraftwerk studio. Anyway you look at it, the original mix is solid and it shows that Friendly has the talent and vision to stay in the breaks scene for as long as he wants to. The Smithmonger remix is tougher and darker and takes a different approach but it is also a solid track that should keep everybody happy. The only question you wonder, is how does TCR keep doing it?
