Germany based Fenology Records brings us their fifth release, this time another single by labelmanager Woody van Eyden, featuring vocalist Susanne Webb. Previous releases were mostly instrumental trancers, but now they have gone for the vocal path.. Did it work out?
Woody has remixed artists like JamX & De-Leon, Atlantic Ocean and M.O.R.P.H., and has also released two cool remixes under his 'Funaki' guise, namely one for Jezper - 'Monastery Hill' on Afterglow and another one for Woody van Eyden - 'Unfinished Symphony'. Earlier vinyls released on Fenology include the above mentioned 'Unfinished Symphony', Alex M.O.R.P.H. - 'Flaming Clouds', Scirocco - 'Scirocco' (review here)and Moonrush - 'Risky Business' (review here). All have been played by numerous top-jocks, and some of them are still sitting in front of many peoples record boxes. 'The 1' is already being spun by Mike Shiver, Guy Ornadel, Ronald van Gelderen, Johan Gielen, Rank 1, DJ Precision, Talla 2XLC and Dave Joy.
A-side: Original Mix A muted kick, some FX and a bunch of hats are what serve as the intro of this mix. The kick gets to its normal volume, being accompanied by a typical WvE bassline along the way. The build-up mostly consists of a first introduction of the vocals by ms. Susanne Webb. They're not too special: the blend-in with the track is OK, but they don't have the catchyness that is needed in todays vocal tracks. Some soft synths and a building string effect get added on the way to the break, let's see what the 'pause part' will bring us.. First of all, a portion of strings is hearable, causing the vocals to be sung once again. The bassline and synthline return, and that's well.. that's it. Not much of a riff has been added, it's just the kick, the bassline and the strings melody that serve as the climax. I'm not sure if this would work well on the dancefloor, but that might be me. All this gets repeated once again, just until the build-down comes in to end the track.
B-side: Sonicvibe Remix The Rumanian Sonicvibe is mostly known for his collaboration with Mike Shiver, 'Lunation', which has been released earlier this year on the Captured label. He has also done a superb remix for Vascotia - 'Calibro', one of the better trancers of the past few months in my opinion. Let's see what he did with 'The 1'. Directly at the beginning of the track, you will notice that this remix is somewhat harder edged than the original. A tough kick and a smooth bassline guide us through the first minute of the track, making friends with a backing synth and a load of percussion on its way. The vocals get introduced for the first time using a muted version of the kick and a bit of the bassline. The other percussion gets filtered in again, building up for the second time towards the climax. All this sounds so much better than the original mix: alot more energy, some cool synths, a nice bassline, only thing that (still) bothers me is the vocals: I just can't get used to them. The break starts off with the vox, backed by a gentle synthline which introduces the main melody later on. A drum roll kicks us right into the climatic stuff. Everything sounds good blended together, plus this wíll do some damage on a dancefloor I think, in comparison with the Original Mix.
Conclusion:
An so-so release on this now established label. The original is not that good: I wasn't really impressed by the vocals (they are ok when you first hear them, but they tend to get a bit annoying after a while). The Sonicvibe remix kind of makes up for it by using the cool bassline and a very decent riff in the break and climax. All in all, there have been better releases on Fenology. A remixes vinyl of this track will be released in the coming weeks as well, including a DJ Precision Remix and two mixes by Danny Wild vs. PeeWee.
