Infusion are busy people at the moment witha tour and an album on the go, so we caught up with them for a quick Q and A session.
Infusion are fast becoming one of the leading groups in electronic music. They hail originally from Australia and the trio is made up of Jamie Stevens, Frank Xavier (known also as Fex) and Manuel Sharrad. Most of their releases are on Thunk but they have done releases for Adam Freeland's Marine Parade Label and Dave Seaman's Audiotherapy label. They helped Adam Freeland with his Free*Land - Us and Them CD release. They are about to unleash an album on the world and they are currently touring the world, so i:Vibes.nu caught up with them for a quick Q and A session.
i:Vibes: 1.How's the new album coming along? How many tracks to you expect to put on the final CD?
A: The album entitled 'Six Feet Above Yesterday ' is finished now with 13 tracks. The first single “Girls Can Be Cruel” has already been released as a single. We’ve made an album that we’re really of and we don’t think many people will be expecting what they hear. Our approach towards it was to just let things flow and forget about everything we’ve done in the past. Doing remixes and 12” singles for years and years has a way of creating subconscious formulas to the way you write music. Even though we’ve loved creating that type of music, we just felt there was so much more we wanted to do that would have been impossible on a 12” DJ-friendly format. We’ve really just tried to create the best music we could by working as a band and writing good songs and concentrating on making something very interesting to our ears by using all sorts of instrumentation.
i:Vibes:When is it expected to be released?
A: The album is already available in Canada via an early limited release. You know the drill – go to www.amazon.ca.
i:Vibes: What does it sound like? Anything different from the typical Infusion sound?
A: We’ve always seen the 12”s that we have been releasing as being written to work in a club environment while our aim with the album was to try and produce something that we can be proud of as a good piece of music. We’re opening ourselves up to new sounds and also drawing upon the music we’ve loved. And a lot of that is from the eighties. We’re bringing that through and developing our own interpretations. So sure there is a bit of an eighties sound but there is also a classical influence and some straight down the line rock that we love. We've got really nice horn and string arrangements, 12 string guitars and all kinds of different instrumentation. On the whole it’s not really a club album as it’s quite song based.”
i:Vibes: Right now, everybody wants to be a DJ. Why do you think that there are so few live dance acts in the US and the UK?
A: I don’t think a lot of people who make electronic music really want to take the risks that we do. It is demanding on you when you’re up there and it takes a certain degree of concentration. We have made our lives hard for ourselves in that it is possible to have a not-so-great gig because occasionally we don’t get that “connection” between us that you need when you improvise. We’d rather that and have a greater possibility of doing something special on the fly and have a great time. Also, most of the bigger dance acts that play live have a very big production entourage which a lot of places can’t afford. The way we play at the moment doesn’t involved 10 other personnel. We’ve been lucky to really streamline the equipment we take with us so it doesn’t cost us a fortune to travel with. When we did our first international gig, we were so unsure as to how we’d go down with the crowd because we’d hardly seen any other act play. Basically we didn’t know how we stacked up against anyone else and our very first international gig was at Fabric in London. It was amazing for us to see the crowd go crazy because we were sure they must have seen so many other bands play the way we do. Evidently not!
i:Vibes:What's different playing from North America compared to say playing the UK or Australia?
A: There are differences between crowds in each city but they tend to be pretty small. Australia is a very big country so there are differences between how crowds react in Sydney and how they react in Brisbane the same way as there is a difference between New York and LA and London and Liverpool, UK. We wouldn’t know how to start pointing out differences between countries. Except perhaps the differences between maybe South America or Japan and most other countries. They’re just altogether a different experience
i:Vibes: Have you found that international crowds are more or less receptive to the fact that you’re not just up there playing records?
A: I think most crowds (on the whole) really enjoy seeing something more than another DJ playing another record. It takes a while but I think people gradually cotton on to the fact that there really is some work happening up there on the stage and it all totally depends on how reactive they are. Really, at the end of the day, people are there to have fun, jump around and enjoy themselves and we like to do exactly the same thing. That’s why we physically get into and jump around – it’s great fun! We have had a few crowds that initially look at us and think, “what the hell are thy doing?” but then loosen up and realize that we’re making those same sounds that the DJs have on the records but done right there in front of them.
i:Vibes: What can we expect from you guys besides the album in the future, any more 12" releases?
A: Not at the moment. There are a couple things we finished a while ago that we’d like to get out at some stage but we’re just concentrating on our upcoming album release now and giving it our all in the live shows.
