Two New York residents played the original mix for John Digweed in his hotel room in early 2004 and he signed it after one listen. Did Digweed see something that others didn't?
Astro and Glyde – Aimless Dame (Bedrock Records)
NYC’s own Astro and Glyde (Gaby Dershin and James Bem) have been making a name for themselves in New York for the last few years. They were known as the residents at Le Souk with DJ Swamy, and an after-after party that went into Monday morning and it was truly legendary according to some. They met John Digweed in his hotel room, while he was in town for an NYC gig earlier in 2004 and he played the CDR once and immediately signed the duo to a release on Digweed’s Bedrock Records. If a track after one play can catch John Digweed’s interest then you must be doing something right. So Bedrock gives you Aimless Dame and on the remix duties is Gaby and James but also Randall Jones, who himself has become more popular of late with Tigerhook and the Bedrock Massive.
Astro and Glyde – Aimless Dame (Bedrock Records)
A1.Aimless Dame (Original Mix) A2.Randall Jones Delayed Dub B1.Gaby and James’ Up Dub B2.Randall Jones Punk Rock Mix
A1.Aimless Dame (Original Mix)
The first track starts slowly with a steady beat with a hypnotic melody that includes the vocal but it is not quite at the very front of the track. The vocal eventually takes the forefront in this first mix, which is the original and it is probably what caught Digweed’s ears and made him sign it immediately. The New York Diva that sings the vocal, talks about sacrifice and then she goes “give me something” and the bassline immediately bolts to the front, as well as the other elements. The song then starts to pick up speed, the song leans towards more house than progressive house at times but it also contains that progressive forward thinking influence. The track is not as filthy as I thought it would be, I’m a big fan of really dirty records but I see why Digweed wanted it. The song is an excellent choice for those tracks that you use to build your sets with. I don’t think the song is anything incredibly spectacular but it is certainly different from your average records these days.
A2.Randall Jones Delayed Dub
So Tigerhook’s Randall Jones is brought in for the first remix. It is slightly slower than the original mix but it beefs up the bassline and adds some incredibly catchy sound effects to this dub. I like the dub, far more than the original mix and it certainly picks my interest here. It adds more subtle riffs at times, the vocal is delayed, hence the “Delayed Dub”, which I think is even better. The song certainly has more of a club feel, for those early sets or early records into sets. You appreciate the vocalist much more with this mix, since the vocal is delayed, you hear more of the singing behind the vocal. This has a much more filthy New York House feel and leave it to John Digweed to pick the best people for the job. There is a breakdown here, the song goes into a simple bassline and a finely crafted weird sound effect is used - and near the very end, an electronic guitar riff is placed near the background. The riff is present for two to three seconds at the most, then it pauses for a few seconds and returns. The song quietly fades into silence and there you have it, the first of two Randall Jones mixes.
B1.Gaby and James’ Up Dub
The second vinyl include this dub mix and the Punk Rock mix that follows and it adds more variety to what is already an extremely varied 2X12” release. I like this, the best of all the versions included on this 2X12”. It starts really slowly with a solid beat and “down, down” vocal, which is placed near the background. The song then picks up and this is more of the New York sound that I’ve grown to love, filthy and just downright dirty. The bassline is just pure dirtiness and it is far catchier and it should make the New York purists very happy. Everytime John Digweed talks about the New York sound, I think this is what he has in mind. The track here is far more uptempo than the previous ones and you hear far more bass in this version. This leans towards the deeper end of progressive house at times, the vocal is not used much here, just a few words that repeat as well as some parts that are cut up. The only problem I have with the song is that it is far too long for my liking but top marks for just pure filthy music, which no one seems to want to make anymore
B2.Randall Jones Punk Rock Mix
Randall Jones finishes this excellent 2X12” release off but here he gives you more of a mixed message with the Punk Rock Mix. You read the title and assume a rock-house clash, with a punk rock bassline but you are totally let down. The start is almost identical to his delayed dub but when this gets going, it leans to a deeper progressive house sound, that is altered in a weird way. The vocal is changed in such a way that it sounds like it is sung in a punk rock song, sadly that’s the closest it comes to punk rock in anyway. The bassline is just pure filth with a dash of dirtiness, I give Randall Jones top marks for trying to be creative, it just did not fit into what I thought it would be. You will either love this mix or totally hate it, there is not anything in between.
Conclusion:
John Digweed picks what you don’t expect again and you see why he signed this after one listen to the CDR. Some of these mixes encompass the best of New York, it gives you a lot of dirtiness and a lot of filthiness. The mixes should give everyone what they want and with Bedrock, you always get quality and you always get something unique. Watch out for Astro and Glyde in the future, I think they will be people to watch in the next twelve months. The only thing that takes away is that the Punk Rock mix is really different and it will distance some people but music is personal, you like some things and you don’t like some things, c’est la vie and that’s the beauty of it.
