Paffendorf's latest addition to their list of productions is 'Welcome To Africa'. With remixes by Robert Natus and Technopunk, can Paffendorf pull this off...?
:: Paffendorf - Welcome To Africa :: Gang Go Music :: GG092
1) Welcome To Africa (Club Mix) The Club Mix begins with a bit of promise as a standard kick beats its way along with some soft knocking tribal percussion. A non-intrusive soft bassline slides its way in, but then thats where the vocals begin too. From here, and also with the help of an effortless clubby synth, the Club Mix is propelled into the land of club cheese, swapping between synth sections and vocal sections which will probably bring a grimace to your face. One for small cheesey clubs and a drunken dancing mob.
2) Welcome To Africa (Robert Natus Remix) Things start to pick up here from the not-so-hot track 1). I was surprised to see a Robert Natus Remix and wanted to hear what was on offer. The track has transformed completely from club cheese into solid pounding techno. I happen to like techno. Unfortunately a lot of people don't - you either love it or hate it really. However, although theres not much to say about this remix due to the nature of techno, what I can say is that its not bad at all due to the sheer fierceness and pounding of the bass. Its filthy stuff. You have all the usual progressions techno has to offer and the addictive off beat hi-hats plus small percussive breaks in all the right places. There is a small vocal section in the middle, which is just long enough to grit your teeth through.
This track reminds me of Hampenberg's infamous 'Duck Toy'. You wouldn't go near it until it got a Kaylab Meets Reloop Remix and was turned into a techno beast. 'Welcome To Africa' has had that happen to it, and the result is quite a playable techno track.
3) Welcome To Africa (Technopunk Remix) The Technopunk Remix of 'Welcome To Africa' begins abruptly, sporting a good percussive range and a gritty, jittery bassline. The synths used to play the melodic parts of the track have had a little more work done on them this time, although they are still a bit plain sounding. There are still some small vocal sections which are pretty much unforgivable, unfortunately. Other than that, its been reworked into a mediocre piece of dance music.
Conclusion:
Theres not much more to say about this very clubby sounding track. The Technopunk Remix spruced it up somewhat and the Robert Natus Remix was definetly required (and pulled off very well). Its not enough though - the vocals still persist and you can't get the club-track feel out of your head.
