An i:Vibes.nu only feature has returned after a little break with Part 4!. We bring you the wife of the kind nutter Spesh (of Jondi and Spesh fame). She is also a huge fan of Armin, Marco V and Tiesto. Check it out
So I Married A DJ is back after a two month hiatus and it will only get bigger and better and Part 4 is certainly no slouch. We talk to the lady known as "Gabber Astrid", her husband is certainly more famous. She is the lady behind the madness that is Spesh (Stephen Kay), who is behind Looq Records with his production partner and equally crazy man Jondi (John David Moyer). As the first three parts of these features have covered a Danish wife, the wife of one of the faster rising deejays in Markus Schulz and Barry Gilbey's partner in crime. So we talk to "Gabber Astrid", who is married to Spesh but her favorite past time is going to see Marco V, Tiesto and Armin play live.
So I Married A DJ Part 4 - Astrid Kobus
i:Vibes: Did you grow up in a musical household, did you learn to play any instruments?
A: No, not really. Although I played classical piano. My teacher wanted me to become a concert pianist; but I got cold feet. Now I play only on white pianos
i:Vibes: What types of music, did you listen to growing up? Which groups?
A: I really liked Italo Disco. I would go to my local Attalos Import Records store to order any 12” imports from Italy. I also was into “Lime” and very much into “Patrick Cowley”.
i:Vibes: So do you work in the music industry or do you do something completely different?
A: Not in the music industry. But another kind of hospitality industry: workroom for Interior Design. I’m the C.F.O. and designer assistant of my brother’s companies.
i:Vibes: You grew up in Holland, is there a big difference between the music culture between California and Holland? How are the clubs and attitudes towards everything different?
A: I think the music in Holland is a bit faster; they don’t call me “Gabber Astrid” for nothing. Club scene is different ‘cause of the 21 + up in the States. In Holland I started going to the Disco and Night Clubs when I was 15. OK, granted you had to be 18 or 21, it worked. Just smile to the doorman! I believe in America, everybody is a bit more open; they don’t care how you look like as long as you have fun.
i:Vibes: What’s your view on the industry today, where do you think it is going? What’s the next big thing in your opinion?
A: People are getting pickier with the DJ’s. We are totally spoiled in San Francisco to see so many national and international DJ’s. They will pick and choose at that point. Next big thing? Still waiting for it. I don’t think “only spinning cd’s” will fly.
i:Vibes: What’s the best part about being married to a DJ?
A: Well, I won’t say no to all the drink tickets, guest lists and v.i.p. treatment......(but then again, I get that even when Spesh is out of town).
i:Vibes: What’s the hardest part about being married to a DJ?
A: Don’t know if it is hard, but I feel like the hostess at his Qool parties. You need to keep smiling at all times. But wait, it is great to be surrounded with so many happy faces that say HI to you
i:Vibes: How often do you travel with Spesh to his foreign gigs? What’s the best part about it?
A: I usually meet up with him when he plays in Holland. I can see all my friends and check out the Dutchies if they like him or not. It takes the crowd about 1 hour (and some Heinies) to finally “get” Spesh. It’s a good thing!
i:Vibes: If you go with Spesh to a gig, where are you more likely to be, at the bar, in the VIP room, in the DJ booth or on the dance floor or in a few of the above?
A: Depends where he is. At his Qool Happy Hour, I almost resigned from dancing. I’ll be socializing and drink my Ketel One on the rocks instead. Elsewhere, it would be 75% on the dance floor and 25% in the VIP booth to rest up.
i:Vibes: How involved are you in Looq Records?
A: I am so NOT involved with Looq Records. They do a good job without me.
i:Vibes: Are you ever asked if a track is any good?
A: Oh jah! In the beginning they did ask. I would say: “Too many breakdowns” or “how about some more bpm’s”. I guess they got the picture and haven’t asked me anymore.
i:Vibes: Do you find that your musical opportunities have opened up, since you met Spesh?
A: Yes sir! Did I mention, guest list, already?
i:Vibes: Would you like to be a vocalist on a future Looq or Spesh track?
A: Haha. No singing for me. They probably won’t like my Dutch accent anyway
i:Vibes: What’s the biggest misconception about people who work in the music business, you find? Talking about your husband...
A: People think it is easy to make electronic music. “The computer does it all, no?” But you still have to come up with all the ideas before you put it in! Not so easy.
i:Vibes: Do you find that your life is too heavily involved with music, have you started to loathe it at times?
A: We don’t play all that hard music at home. Lounge and classical for me.
i:Vibes: So what’s next for Spesh?
A: Spesh will bring his sound to more people.
We would like to thank Astrid for taking time out of her busy schedule to do this interview and Spesh for actually saying go ahead with the interview.
