Coming in next from Big Star Records is 'Razorblade' by Danny C. Carrying a coarse hard trance sound, this one is hoping to keep you going out of summer and right the way forward for some time to come...
'Razorblade' comes in three forms: The Original Mix, an Armani & Ghost Soft Porn Remix (ooh-er!) and finally there is a DJ Choose Razorscape Remix. keep your eyes open for this bit of hard trance in the near future.
:: Danny C - Razorblade :: Big Star Records
1) Razorblade (Original Mix) The Original Mix is kept afloat by a deep, constant and warbly bassline which really allows you to groove while not holding back pace-wise either. A grainy synth with an overdriven sound and a sharp edge plays a small loop over and over, rallying the track together and paving the way for the lead synth to start the real series of build ups. The track is centred on this lead synth - which has a massive trance feel and also retains a crisp cutting edge - which plays wave upon wave of driving, stabbed notes to keep the track pushing on and on without relent, which is great for an energetic dancefloor. A relatively quiet breakdown half way through the track brings on an interesting change. While the synths continue on their power trip, the bassline becomes slightly more subtle but is backed up by a big gurgle of bass from some kind of sfx / synth every 4 beats. This gives the second half of the track a darker and more driving feeling to it. On its way out, the synth we initially heard has another minute or so to itself, before the track reaches its final beats.
2) Razorblade (Armani & Ghost Soft Porn Remix) This bizarrely named remix is noticeably different straight away. It chugs along at a slower pace and lots of focus lies on the plodding bass line. The stabbing synths are back in this remix, although they sound much tinnier and have maybe overindulged on the reverb, but thats a minor point. Every now and then the synths give out a wave of bass in the last few notes of their stabbing lead hook and these small moments act as boosts that keep the track alive. Otherwise, everything just revolves around the repeating stabs of the synths in this rather short track, plus a lot more repetition on top of that. Its almost progressive hard trance, if you like.
3) Razorblade (DJ Choose Razorscape Remix) Aha, a remix by DJ Choose. I was looking forward to this - I like the 'Choose' sound from previous tracks and remixes so this has caught my attention. Right after a short, beaty and percussive intro, you're thrown right into a thick and grinding bassline which instantly reminds you of past productions that DJ Choose has been a part of. The synths involved are very tinny and coarse - there is one thicker and lower sounding backing layer while a higher sounding layer takes care of the more melodic side of things, and more melodic it is when compared to the first two remixes. The melody itself is heavily reminiscent of Choose productions - minor in key and carrying the sound of impending and imminent danger it drives the track easily. Slowly, familiar high pitched strings can be heard soaring in the background. I love this particular combination of sound it just oozes energy, and thats what dancefloor junkies will be craving.
Conclusion:
'Razorblade' is a strong piece of hard trance. The Original Mix does while the Armani & Ghost Soft Porn Remix lacks a bit in variety and pace. However, the DJ Choose Razorscape Remix steals the show with lots of classic DJ Choose sounding influences making a strong and energetic track. Good stuff.
