The monstrous 'All In My Mind' by Kevin has returned, this time in the form of two new remixes. Have they improved on this already stunning track...?!?
The two new remixes of 'All In My Mind' are a remix by Hepba and a remix by Søren Weile ('W' from F&W - Lars Frederiksen & Søren Weile who, unsurprisingly, own the F&W label). The Original Mix (reviewed here http://www.ivibes.nu/index.php?article=3331) was fantastic and was dubbed i:Vibes track of the week when it was reviewed, so lets waste no time and see how these new mixes get along...
:: Kevin - All In My Mind (Remixes) :: F&W Recordings
1) All In My Mind (Hepba Remix) The immediate difference you'll notice here is the beat. It really does pound hard. Also, the percussion is stronger in flavour in this remix and stands out especially in the beginning sections of the track. The next (and last) big difference is the new bass instrument - it is coarse, heavy and plays along in an almost continuous drone. It is very nearly (but not quite) a hardstyle sounding bassline. This means its a little out of place, but then again its making this track accessible to hardstyle DJs, which isn't a bad thing. Other than these things, the rest of the track - structure, synths and melody remains pretty much unchanged. I think the synths have been 'tightened' up slightly, taking away some of the 'massive' feeling they originally produced. Still, this is an interesting take on this fabulous track.
2) All In My Mind (Søren Weile Remix) This remix caught my eye - F&W haven't stopped impressing me with their music since December 2003 so I wanted to find out how Søren could perform on a solo remix. Well, I'm yet to be disappointed! After a few bars of simple beats and light percussion, you get an instant taste of whats to come - a short blast of bass synth. Its deep and menacing and you want more off it at once. A few more bars later, this vicious bass synth becomes the main bassline, continuously growling away with its raw bass. A great start to say the least! While you're still reeling from this bass, you almost fail to notice a synthline creeping in - a short but catchy hook playing ominous and sinister sounding notes played by a strong but murky sounding synth which lurks and intertwines with the bass. This mixture of sound is already fantastically fearsome and the track isn't even half way through yet. A breakdown sees the onset of the familiar 'All In My Mind' melody. The synth that plays it has a sharper and strained sound to it, playing perfectly with the gritty bass and keeping with the feel of the introductory synthline we heard earlier in the track. One thing to notice is that the melody isn't identical - its been tweaked slightly right at the end of its loop to fit in with the powerful sinister feeling generated by the rest of the tracks elements. Mind blowing.
Conclusion:
More quality tunage! Although the Hepba Remix may not appeal as much to hard trance lovers as much as the Original mix did, the Søren Weile Remix certainly will and then some! Strong and powerful, showing off sinister melody, its a force to be reckoned with. Level with the Original Mix or even better? Its too close to call - play them both!!
