Oxygen Recordings is back. Sander van Doorn is back. And that can only mean one thing - more quality tech-trance is making its way here...!
Sander Van Doorn is continuuing his run on Oxygen Recordings with his, and the label's, third release which is entitled 'Dark Roast'. It's already being hammered by a huge assortment of DJs including John Digweed, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyond, Marco V and Johan Gielen. There are two mixes on the vinyl - the A-side holds the S.V.D. Remix and on the flip you can find the Original Mix.

A: Dark Roast (S.V.D. Remix) This track - and this remix - of 'Dark Roast' is very much in the same vein as Sander van Doorn's previous release, 'Punkd' and 'Loaded', however this is by no means a bad thing because of the unique style these tracks are created in. This time round the bassline has a precise presence while managing to remain soft and fairly flowing. As always, you slowly but surely become inundated with coarse and warped - some subtle, some raw - sfx of varying sizes, allowing you to feel the groove and providing the track with its addictive tech-tranciness. The main feature of this track, which can't really be called a melody or even a hook, is a deep and rough sfx which surges forwards on every fourth beat once the track has built up to its fullest sound. Another nice and very much subtle element to this track which caught my ear was the use of a reversed and echoed kick drum which first makes an appearance during the short section preceding the breakdown in the middle of the track. Smashing!
B: Dark Roast (Original Mix) The Original Mix has quite a difference in overall flavour - the kick is snappier and the bassline used is a warbly and acidic sounding line which carries a techno feeling along with it. In the usual SvD style though, the track is awash with many sfx woven into the sound in all the right places. Following on from the techno theme mentioned just a moment ago, an off-beat techno style hi-hat is also used to good effect. There is a long breakdown in the middle of the track which is quite ambient and kind of melodic. A deep and rather trancey synth is idly playing some notes which blend together more and more creating something really nice and soothing to listen to. It subtly builds up and just when you think its going to burst out into a trance style melody, it just steps back into the main gist of the track and continues in its dark and techy manner.
Conclusion:
Another great production from Sander van Doorn! His unique, grinding tech-trance sound still gets me hooked each time I listen. The Original Mix is like an easier version of the track which gently pushes some dark melody and an overall dark, techy sound. The S.V.D. Remix is where its at though, with a proper groove to it and a mass of gritty sfx, you can't go wrong!
