Kissthatass records returns for record number two after the amazing success of the first release. Is this record as good as the first one? Find out...
Ziv Shalit – Ganja (KissthatAss Records)
Kissthatass records is back for release number two, not only does the label name rule, the logo rules and so does the vision of the label owner. The first release was Cinderella – Where’s My Shoe and it received a lot of play from house deejays and it was even included on an Azuli compilation. It was certainly an amazing way to begin for a label and never one to rest on his laurels, Ziv Shalit decided to bring out release number two. The label is all about funky music and it certainly takes a creative marketing approach to market records, which is so badly missed by so many labels these days. So KTA 002 is Ziv Shalit – Ganja and this seems to prove the point that this label will be one to watch in the future and Ziv Shalit will be a name that you will hear more of.
Ziv Shalit – Ganja (KTA 002) (KissthatAss Records)
A1 – Ziv’s Afro Blitz Mix B1 – Zigi’s Drumzz Mix
A1 – Ziv’s Afro Blitz Mix
This starts out, just the way I like my tribal house to be, dirty, and slightly dark (I like it very dark but I’ll go with what I have to work with). You have the typical bassline made up of tribal drums and the tribal sound that one expects. The song slowly builds at the start, letting you get adjusted to the tribal sounds first before adding more elements. About half a minute in, the song picks up and starts to go off in the Lawler-Tenaglia direction. You then hear African chants used in the background, it reminds you of Steve Lawler’s Nubreed 3 CD2, where he used the African Chants to great effect. About two minutes in, the song seems to change gears and direction and it completely shocks you. I’m not sure about the rest of you but I like my tribal to be just dark and dirty, with few other elements involved but this goes into funky house from now on. A trumpet comes in and a funky riff is added, the tribal drums then are minimized compared to the start. You wonder am I listening to two records at once?. I’m a huge fan of funky house as well but I’m not digging the tribal then funky house direction, I say keep one or the other. The song still works well but my likes probably got the best of me here. The song is quite unique, Ziv deserves top marks for that and for trying to be different. Now around the four and half minute mark, the tribal chants come back in, but they are not used to such great effect as they were at the very start. The tribal drums come back in, but with not as much gusto as it did at the start. The song is now nearly completely funky house with a slight tribal element, rather when it started out as a pure tribal song. It carries on like this till the finish line and some people will absolutely love this but it gives me more mixed messages because I’m such a big fan of tribal music. Solid tune and unique approach, just not my cup of tea.
B1 – Zigi’s Drumzz Mix
Now the flipside mix comes from Zigi, who I have never heard of but with the record label, you never seem to know what you will get. This track starts with more sound effects built around less drums but these drums are echoed at times. I’m hoping here that the song is not around crossbreed like the first mix because I want more tribal!. The chants are used here as well but they are echoed as well and placed further back than the first mix, which gives you a different sound. This mix is certainly darker, not as dark as I truly love but this will probably be played by Steve Lawler, Danny Tenaglia or Tom Stephan because it fits their types of tribal. The song is more of a crossbreed at times, it leans towards tribal with housy elements, which is a polar opposite from the original mix which was funky house with tribal elements. The track makes great use of swirling sound effects backed by the echoed drums in places and it seems to work but it does adds excellent variation for this record, one is funky house and the other is tribal.
Conclusion:
I’m not a big fan of the first track because I rather have my tribal house, rather than genre crossovers but it takes guts to go with an idea like this. I think this is why Ziv Shalit will be a name to watch in the future. He could have easily made the first track, a dark evil tribal monster but he wanted to go in a funky house direction. You know he can easily change things to suit every type of tribal house fan. The second mix is much meaner and much darker and it makes great use of sound effects and the unique take on the drums is very nice. It’s is not a bad second record for Ziv Shalit and Kiss that Ass records. Keep watching this label, I’m sure they will be releasing some darker tribal monsters in the future.
