The newest feature is asking deejays, what is your top ten records of all time?, First Up, Mara's Barry Gilbey
i:Vibes.nu is at the forefront of innovation, when it comes to new features and new ideas. So as Andy P was thinking about his top ten favorite records for a thread on a messageboard, the idea came to him, let's ask deejays and artists and label honchos, that exact question. He thought it would be interesting to find out, what deejays, labels and artist consider as their top ten of all time.
Part 1 - Top Ten Records of All Time - Barry Gilbey
Barry Gilbey for those who don't know, is a crazy man/genius who tends to live on the edge. He is best known for his alias Mara, which he was part of, with his wife Sara Whittaker-Gilbey. They also run Choo Choo Records, which has received massive praise since the beginning.
Barry Gilbey - All Time Top 10 (Today...tomorrow it would be different!)
1. U2 - With or without you. The only record that would stay in my top ten regardless of how i feel. Happy or sad i love this record. The beautiful tension between vocals and the guitar just amaze me every single time i hear it. For me just about perfect.
2. Harold Budd & Brian Eno - Their Memories. So simple and yet an amazing example of what quality chill out music should be about. The melodies slide effortlessly across the bed of ambience. Stunning. It sends shivers down my spine every time i hear it.
3. Sasha - Xpander . This just sums up so many good memories for me. From being in the Dj booth at Ministry of sound with Anthony Pappa & Sasha one of the first times Sasha played it to playing back to back with Anthony Pappa with 2 copies of it in Thessaloniki Greece. But more than anything, it reminds me of one of the best New Years Eve's i've ever had.
4. U2 - Pride (In the name of love) - Yet another example of fantastic song writing. The movement between vocals and guitar is fantastic and it really just draws you into the track.
5. Calexico - Whipping the horses eyes. I came across totally by chance and fell totally in love with it. Who would have thought Pedal steel guitars and chill out would work? love it!
6. N.E.R.D. - Lapdance. Bit of a difference from number 5 :) Really like N.E.R.D love their jerky almost out of time rhythms and severe use of eq. Cool as anything song as well!
7. Metallica - Creeping Death. No really :) I love the sheer aggression in this. Also you can't fault Metallicas guitar sound.
8. Massive Attack - Angel . Wow what a record. Just the drama, the beauty of the vocal ranged against the beats and the furious guitar. How can this record fail to move you?
9. Coldplay - Trouble. Awesome song writing and it also recalls a certain point in my life. Plus one of the big football shows used as background music while my beloved Sheffield Wednesday (my football team) were relegated from their division. Don't.......... stop...i'm going to cry.....
10. Barry Gilbey - Aramaic. You honestly think i could have a top ten without something of my own in? :) The strange thing is, its without doubt the best thing i've ever written but most people will never hear it. It was written especially for a chill out album i've just completed for a TV company in the UK. Maybe i'll remix it so people can hear it. Maybe.
Thanks to Barry Gilbey for actually coming up with a top ten and reasons.
