Way back in 1995 Paul Edge and Mike Odd aka Twister made Metamorphosis of Narcotics. Now it's back with the 2004 remixes and some reworks on a double vinyl package thanx to RAD23.
Twister - Metamorphosis of narcotics 2004 update
X side - John Selway Rework Starting with the well known "Tonight were gona launch a new revolution" vocal sample that we have come to know and love this tune trucks on very nice with lovely hats coming in while the vocals play out. The vocals finish and a lovely breakdown comes in before a bass line rushes in and a smoke machine drones through. The beat kicks in and it's time to go. A usual trance / hard dance percussion is the key here with a pumping bass line although the tune is sadly very slow on its normal pitch. It's a brilliant start of set tune for any hard dance dj and a nice mid set one for a driving trance dj. Vocals coming in here and there while the bass stays almost exactly the same all the way through. When the full breakdown hits the smoke machine drownds out the melody synth for most of it with crowd noises coming in and out and the hats building to a nice kick back into the main tune until the end.
XX side - Paul Edge Remix This starts off with the full vocal " 40 years ago..." with stabs of thunder coming in and out and the same smoke machine sound. It takes a fair bit to get going with drums not kicking in fully till after a small break full of smoke machine and percussion. The bass rumbles through with the same sub bass drone as on the other track but this one is a little more up tempo when everything is added together. The breakdown is much bigger with the bass flowing nicely over the melody that fades in and out. Atmospheric sounds are filling the breakdown here. It's a definate hands in the air breakdown as the synth line is barely loud enough to hear until right near the end before break beats kick in, build and take you back into the main tune that trundles to the end.
Y side - Twister Remix Bongo drums are the first thing you hear now on this interpretation of the 1995 classic tune. With different sounds coming in to combine a lovely tribal feel while still being trancy. Even a guiro is used and it's not often these days we hear one in a trance tune but its used to full effect here. While the synth creeps in from the distance the track builds nicely. A tasty breakdown with a very different bass line as drums roll over the top comes in a 3rd of the way through and the track kicks off with female vocals being layed over but with no particular words. The middle of this track is lovely hands in the synth stuff that really gets a trance crowd going and works very well on a dance floor with tiny sub bass booms echoing in and out and the same female voice being layered. It has more tempo than the other tracks and seems to also have more elements a defiante for all trance / tribal heads.
YY side - Original outer limits anthem 10 years on and still going strong this is the original mix. Kicking right in with drums and hats. Suttle stabs of sound fade in and out as the track builds in layers around them. The use of flange on certain percussion bits works to great effect here underlying the tune nicely while small sounds crescendo in. It's a slower tune but it is definatly one that will warm up the crowd well. A lovely high synth comes in over the top of all the other layers almost atmospheric until the break hits and the pitch changes while tiny vocal sounds are heard over tribal style drums. The track has no major builds to high points its just one lovely flowing tune that has a main synth that will make any trance lover stand up and take note.
Conclusion:
I like the XX side at the moment more the vocals are top class and well placed and it's a great tune to start of a hard dance mix with.
