We had a chat with swiss dj and trance producer Dj Chilli. Read in to see what he had to say!
i:Vibes: Your name is probably new to some of the people out there. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
A: I am Johannes Ilic better known under my project names Dj Chilli and Freedom. I am 21 years old, originally coming from the Principality of Liechtenstein and studying and living in Zurich Switzerland at the moment.
i:Vibes: Can you tell us abit about your musical background?
A: I released my first vinyl called "Dj Chilli - Break Out (Release Me)" on Illuminate (Drizzly Music) in 2003. After a little break and changing studio I produced my second track together with Umberto Cea from Q-Lab in 2004. The record was released on Tatana`s Sirup Label under the name "Freedom Feel - Free". And after that, we produced some remixes for different projects like "GREY & FROST Meets Xsonic - What Is Your Pleasure" out on Torpedo Records, "Dj D-Light Pres. MERLY DEE - Backflash" recently released on Deepdive Records and "Devois - Say My Name" coming soon on eXcellent Records. There are also some tracks that aren`t currently signed and we`re hoping that they will be released soon.
i:Vibes: I've heard that your first compilation was recently released, what can you tell us about it?
A: It`s was a real honour to me, to mix my first official compilation. The story behind is, that the partycommunity www.partyguide.ch wanted to release its first own compilation. And so they started an online voting where people could vote for the soundstyle they want to have on the CD and also for the Dj`s that they want to mix the compilation. Finally Dj Centaury and I myself got the most votes.
i:Vibes: How did you feel when you found out that you had been selected by the people to mix it?
A: As already mentioned, it was a very great honour to me and I really thank to all the people that have voted from my heart. For a young man, coming from a very small country like Liechtenstein it`s a great feeling to know that people appreciate what one is doing and that they like one`s music. Also, it was very interesting to have a deeper look into music business meaning the things going behind producing a compilation.
i:Vibes: Yeah I can see that, you mentioned earlier that you are a student aswell. Have the mixture between the studying and dj'ing ever been hard?
A: Sometimes. But I am a person that has to do something all the time. If not I`m bored a lot. I am very active, always working, learning or doing something else. I started my studies in computer science last year but I had some problems and that was a reason why I had to quit that topic. And it was also a very hard university, so I was looking for a nice job fitting to me, found one and now I am working.
But that doesn`t mean, that I`m not a student anymore. To improve my skills and to get an education I started new studies as audio engineer at the school of audio engineering in Zurich this year and it`s is going very well in contrast to computer science. I`m very happy at the moment and hope that this will last for the next couple of years.
i:Vibes: You started as a dj when you were just 15 years old, do you remember your first gig?
A: My first gigs... yeah... I organized several school class parties in Liechtenstein and these were my first gigs. At that time I also played main stream music from CD`s but my heart beated for electronic music.
i:Vibes: Liechtenstein is a very small country and pretty unknown for many. What's the electronic music scene like there?
A: To be honest, there unfortunately doesn`t exist an electronic music scene. We only have a very little club where they play House, Hip Hop and mainstream. And when I say "small" I mean very small. Most of the people that are addicted to this kind of music go out in Switzerland and Austria.
i:Vibes: Ok, you have been in the scene for a while now. - What's the highlight in your career so far?
A: My highlight concerning gigs definitely was my apperance at Nature One in Germany this summer. That was an amazing peaceful great festival. Concerning my musical things the highlights were my releases and remixes and also the compilation now. And I thank all the people that helped me in going my way and having some success.
i:Vibes: Do you have like a dream that you want to fulfil as a dj/producer or do you simply take the things as they come?
A: I just take the things as they come. But I also have some ideas and dreams. Everyone has that. I hope that I can live with at least doing music related works. We have a good sentence in German: "Der Weg ist das Ziel". What means something translated like "the way is the goal" and not the other way round. If you are happy about what you are doing at the moment it`s a better life than if you are not happy and only work for a certain goal in the future.
i:Vibes: How do you think you have developed as a dj during your time behind the decks?
A: I don`t really know. I did a lot of experiences concerning the way of mixing, the behaviour to the party people and also the style of music. You are developping and improving every day. And you also don`t like the same sound everytime. It`s kind of a very individual thing.
i:Vibes: Have you ever used a schedule of which songs that you should play during a gig?
A: You mean if I prepare my sets? The answer is no. I just look into my record bag before I go to the location and think which records I will take with me and which ones I leave at home. And when I start spinning I just play what I think is suitably at this moment.
i:Vibes: Ok, What can we expect from you in the future?
A: I can`t promise anything ;) There are some remixes that will be relased this year. And I hope that there will be some follow ups to my own projects and maybe also some new project names. Just watch out.
