A: In The Music (Original)
The Original starts off slowly and eases its way through its intro section with a simple beat, hi-hat and the vocal samples from which the track gets its name. When it does kick off, you have a pulsating bassline accompanied by gritty sounding electro samples and a continuation of the vocals. The track really takes hold a minute or so later though, as a very electronic and housey sounding offbeat bass synth stab starts to kick along - it reminds me of the same kind of instument used in Steve Murano's remix of Commander Tom - Attention. The final distinctive element we hear is a midrange synth drone which seems to oscillate around the beat and generally carries the track along steadily. The are a few breakdowns which are dotted around the track which consist mainly of the vocal and droning synthline. Nice and chunky electro type house with a nice synthy edge.
B1: In The Music (Remix)
The simply dubbed Remix of 'In The Music' begins very similarly to the Original. Once its past the introduction though, you hear a lot of differences. Instead of a deep bassline, the kick is accompanied by a very housey sounding hollow sounding instrument - kind of like a synthed version of a percussive woodblock hit. This remix features some very percussive sections and focuses heavily on the vocals too, as did the Original. The synthline returns, but instead of an oscillating drone, its more of a sustained stabbing sound. Overall, what you have is a very subdued, progressive and deep house interpretation.
B2: DJ Tools
On the B2 side of the vinyl, there are the lone vocals from the track for all you acapella / scratch fans out there.
Conclusion:
A decent piece of crossover prog / house music. Obviously at home in a house / progressive set, however these two could probably find their way into the start of some more techy based sets fairly easily.
