Dave Seaman & Phil K team up on one of the best compilations of the year. These CD's have something for everybody, from House to Breakbeats to Trance. No fan should go without at least a listen to this CD before voting for their favorite CD of '04!
Dave's CD is the Trancier of the two, but it seems to have a bit of a different flavor from his older work. It sounds more powerful, and a bit more full than his earlier style. I'd say it's a change for the better.
01: Habersham - Transparent Sound A great opening track; starts off slow, and builds into a bass monster. This track definately sets the mood for the CD, and is one of the few Breakbeat tracks on Dave's mix.
02: Luke Chable - Melburn A fairly light, trancey track by Chable. It has a similar feeling to Shepherd and Basstrap. Not my favorite style by Luke, but still fairly catchy.
03: Jeff Bennett - Swapping Mixes very nicely with Melburn; a shakey sort of bass-heavy track, and the first track on the CD that has a 4/4 beat.
04: Stereo & McGrath - Hostile Ground Fairly light melody over simple bassline; more of a building song than anything else.
05: Powerplant - Blame (Luke Chable Remix) The sound that Luke has made popular strikes again; not a bad tune, if you're not tired of his style by now.
06: Cass - Giant (Cass' Four Four Two Mix) An amazingly powerful, beautifully constructed giant of a tune. Driving and hard-hitting, this track will not fail to please any fan of Electronic music.
07: Infusion - Girls Can Be Cruel (Infusion sQ’ed Mix) Infusion's great take on their own song; it keeps with their usual style, a driving bass line, and good use of effects.
08: Paul Jackson & Steve Smith - The Push (Far From Here) A track with more of a House flavor than anything featured on the CD so far, and an indication that the mix is winding down.
09: Ernest Saint Laurent - Do Ya Dub Disco is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear this track. It has that old-school synth sound that reminds me of something straight out of the 70's; you can almost touch the sideburns on this track.
10: Redanka - In A State (fUcKed Vocal Mix) A classic track from Redanka, with a bit of a twist. It's lighter than it's counterpart, but still a rollicking good track.
11: Stel & Good Newz - Particle A great track to end a great mix; downtempo, rather relaxed, and a good track to reflect on.
Phil's CD more represents the Breakbeat sound much more heavily than Dave's CD. It goes into a lot more eclectic styles, and is a very bold mix.
01: Polanski - Film Song # 1 A nice choice for an introduction to the mix by Phil. Strong melody, assorted vocal samples, and a rather light overall feeling to it.
02: Vance Musgrove - Music In The 24th & a half Century An interesting blend of beat and melody that worked very well. Promises good things to come on this mix.
03: Monkz - Slow Talking This is where the mix picks up a bit. Despite the title, the track has a lot of energy and power, and features the acapella from Derrick Carter's Where U At?
04: PQM & Phil K - They Just Won't Let Me Be A driving, forceful song; not quite the typical sound you would expect from PQM, but they pulled it off very nicely on this track.
05: NuBreed - One Day (Phil K's DJ Re-edit) Without a doubt my favourite track on Phil K's CD. Uplifting but not too light, vocals in all the right places, and a nice bassline all work together to make this track an altogether amazing listening experience.
06: The Operators - Furball A darker, more electro feel is the first thing that comes to mind when I heard this track. The first impression fit the track very well, it's a dark, brooding, techy roller-coaster of a tune.
07: Habersham - Follow The White Rabbit Another electro-style track; while this one isn't as dark as Furball, it's more catchy, and helps solidify Habersham's consistant penchant for incredible releases. 08: The Disciple Grin - Odditease (Transformer Man's Blueberry Muffin Recipe) As eclectic as its name, this tune is another hard-edged, aggressive musical deviant.
09: Andy Page - Mr. Rush Not a tune for the faint of heart; despite it's rather slow pace, there is an underlying power that is apparent throughout its entirety.
10: The Crystal Method - Born Too Slow (NuBreed Remix) Just to prove he wasn't done yet, Phil K threw in this floorfiller to help break the dark, overbearing feel of the mix so far. A fast-paced vocal monster that pushes the boundaries of Phil K's sounds to the other end of the spectrum.
11: Dark Globe - Take Me To The Sound A great choice for an ending; not too mellow, but not too harsh. A superb blend of all the styles heard throughout the CD that works rather well.
Conclusion:
Superb mixing, seamless track selection, and a great mix of styles definately make this CD one of my favorite releases this year. I can't wait to see who's featured on the next volume!
