Stel & Good Newz gained notoriety with their first two releases 'Particle' and 'Fineline'. How will their third release, 'Cave In' compare?
Stelios Vassiloudis & Vangelis Labrakis, better known as Stel & Good Newz, have emerged onto the scene amongst the influx of talent to come out of Greece. They have collaborated on two successful releases so far in their recording careers, and return with their third release on their third label, Swift Records. Can they maintain a high level of quality and quantity?
The production quality of the duo is apparent in the 'Original Mix', however they have chosen to venture in a different direction with their approach. The lush pads and melodies listeners have become accustomed to are now accompanied by a thick, pulsing bassline underneath. Spacey atmospheric affects and pads, along with the melody, build together nicely throught the break, and provide a gracefully building 'hands-in-the-air' break before returning the energy back to the floor. Although technically well-produced, the third single fails to live up to the expectations garnered by their previous two efforts.
Tone Depth has been recruited for the remix duties and delivers with his trademark style in successful fashion. The pulsing basslines evident in the original are further amplified and dubbed, and are the only reminder of the original work. Floating, atmospheric synths intertwine modestly with Tone Depth's signature guitar effects and tribal drum loops, making this an excellent track for those late nights / early mornings.
Conclusion:
The difficult part of releasing gems as your first two records is that everyone will always expect the same standard, and will look on any lesser works as not living up to potential. Stel & Good Newz earned industry-wide praise and peak-time play with their first two releases, and although their third release, 'Cave In', is technically and musically well produced, it simply doesn't deliver like the first two. On the flip, Tone Depth provides a wonderful interpretation on the remix to add to his rapidly growing discography of quality works.
