Heres something a little different, something new - its Radius Productions' debut album, 'Spherical Motion'. Infusing many different genres into an overly ambient soundscape, how does this new sound hold out? Read on!
I received this CD with great interest - from its wonderful descriptions to its brilliantly coloured design work it was safe to say I was intrigued from the start. Promising a blend of techno, jungle, ambient and trance into one unique creation hooked my interest easily.
Radius Productions currently consists of four members: Founder, Executive Producer and Electronic Musician Scott Robinson, who founded Radius in 2002 looking to integrate electronic music with 3D imagery; Co-Founder, Electronic Musician and Content Editor Natasa Lisica, who co-founded Radius and who excels in creating ambient soundscapes; Co-Producer, Electronic Musician and Mastering Engineer Jack Mazzotti, who is responsible for many of the lead melodies and the main hand when it comes to mastering and remixing the productions; and last but not least, newest Radius member Graphic Designer, 2D/3D Animator and Visual Design Consultant LD Walker, who is the mastermind behind a lot of the Spherical Motion visual work.
Anyway, onto the CD...
Radius - Spherical Motion
1) Initial Invasion The album begins on a slow and gentle note with phased chords and ambience drawing you in to whats to come. A beat is introduced and the chords and floating ambience continues. A melody emerges towards the end but things are generally kept simple as we move onto the next track...
2) Ischemic Screams The beat continues with a different and deeper flavour of ambience and there is a much more notable percussive presence. Rather unchanging, this track brings your attention to the ongoing percussive rhythms present.
3) Futile Resistance A stark change in mood from gentle suspension to deep, dark and mysterious here as some deep bass notes start to pulsate in the background and create some tension. A reverbed and pounding beat begins to play, emphasising the dark tones of the music and really fuel this track, which is essentially dark ambient techno, along.
4) Urbane Jungle The dark ambience gives way to something a little more upbeat as the thick ambience takes a back seat and we're treated to a more tribal sounding beaty affair. The last half of this track acts as a build up to the next...
5) Return Of The Sojourner Instead of kicking off, the first half of this track takes a relaxed stance and plays around with some quiet synth notes and a very electronically sampled sounding stringed instrument. A synth build is used to introduce some fairly sharp beats and a medley of percussion cushioned by spacey sounding tinny synths. Unfortunately some of the elements in this track can sound a little disjointed at times. That said, it also has a nice melodic element to it in the latter parts of the track.
6) Signs This next track is straight of the mark with a constant beat and constant synth backing. We've reached the more upbeat and driven part of the album and its about at this point that, while listening to the album for the first time, I suddenly realised I was halfway through and how absorbed by it I was. A very good sign for any album.
7) Infusion This next track uses the constant energy from the last and transfers it to something a lot more sinister sounding with an electronic bass element pushing out a rhythm, a deep bass kick beating away and a really funky sounding synth grinding along in the background. Throughout the track (which is only 3 minutes long), this fantastic synth just continues to build, amounting stacks of tension and anticipation.
8) Lucid The previous track fades out leaving just one lonely ambient wail, resulting in an incredibly dramatic drop in tempo. Back to pure ambience, lonely echoey sfx and plodding bass elements working their way through the soundscape. This track weighs in at an astonishing 15:25 long and is basically one giant progression. Towards the end, its worked itself up slightly, the main element being an electronic sounding arpeggiated line which controls the rest of the surrounding sounds.
9) Rapt The final track erupts into bubbles of bass and deep ambience. It features a variety of broken beats and various deep and slow melodic elements and progressions. A very nice way to ease you out to the end of the album indeed.
Conclusion:
An intriguing album, best described as ambient techno. I enjoyed listening to it and I think this is definitely one for those into their ambience or those who just want to hear something different.
