Theres been a flurry of ASOT offerings as of late. Heres the first of the bunch - Signum's 'The Timelord'...
:: Signum - The Timelord :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT027
A: The Timelord (Original Mix) The Original Mix begins fairly strongly with an instant beat, percussive line and thick, gurgling bass. The first half of the track is basically a long and progressive build which combines a lot of smooth and dreamy sounding synth elements which eventually evolve into the melodic basis of the track. There is a very long break which spends a few minutes being very chilled and ambient then moves onto a much more epic and stronger sounding mass of sounds in Signum's known big trance style. The melody is simple and chord based, but it has feeling and is driven by some very deep sounding trance synths which help out immensely, providing sinister, epic strength.
B: The Timelord (Signum's Spectral Balance Remix) The Spectral Balance Remix by Signum again is a much slower and ploddy affair. It tries to be really deep and chilled in the same way as Markus Schultz' Coldharbour remixes. However it lacks the infusion of masses of carefully crafted elements and runs out of steam about halfway through just as its bringing in the chilled and toned down melody. A stromger beat is used to try and maintain things with mixed results. One for hardcore deep / progressive fans only really - not my cup of tea.
Conclusion:
The Original Mix of 'The Timelord' is good and saves this vinyl with its excellent synth lead and touch of Signum spice. The remix on the flip though isn't anywhere near as inspiring and will only appeal to a much smaller range of music lovers out there.
