Six months after their first release Rehab/Incest hit the drum and bass scene, the team behind The Mastermind Records are back with their latest offering.
Having only been established earlier this year in March, the last few months have been a meteoric rise for the label. This looks set to continue over the coming weeks as one of the leading record distribution agencies Nu-Urban takes on the Mastermind contract.
“I’m pleased with how its been going so far and with alist djs starting to play Vital Elements’s tunes, such as Hype and Kenny Ken I know things are definitely moving forward” said Laurence Manchee, founder of the label. “But now we’re ready to take it to the next level and really establish ourselves as the home of some of the world’s best emerging talent and working with Nu-Urban will allow us to do that.”
The idea to start a record label came when Laurence, founder of the world-renowned www.jungleravers.com and JR management artist agency, who felt the scene deserved some fresh input. “We’ve got so many good artists in the studio who are on their way to being top producers that I thought that starting a label would be a good chance to showcase their talent,” he said. “From the start, I planned to make lots of vocal tunes so we could use the number of MCs we have at the agency which The Qemists are on the case with at the moment.” This has been plain to see as Rehab/Incest received wide plays across the scene and rave reviews in Knowledge Mag and on drum and bass arena, while the Qemists’ debut on the label React/Generation propelled the Brighton producers into the limelight. Their jazz-infused follow-up “Summer Son” confirmed The Mastermind’s growing reputation for quality new homegrown talent and this fourth release looks set to take the label to new levels. “Having run the website and the artist agency for more than three years now, I think we at the JR camp know what most people want to hear,” said Laurence. “When you are releasing records you want to create something that is going to stand out from the crowd and this new release does exactly what we are aiming for - a combination of rolling beats and bad basslines everytime!” And with four years experience of producing and 10 years into the drum and bass scene, Vital Elements’ Graham also know what it takes to be successful. “We set ourselves high standards and are constantly sending off our tunes to top DJ’s like Hype to see how we can improve them,” he said. “But action speaks louder than words and we want our music to do the talking for us. We want to be known as producers who are slammin it on the dance floor because that is the way the to stand out from the crowd in drum and bass.” And when it comes to getting technical, Vital Elements are the men to ask. “We love getting lost in the equipment when we are making a tune and coming up with something that sounds unique to ourselves,” says Graham. “But the key to it is to keep working continuously on it to produce nastier and nastier sounds. We’re making drum and bass after all, not pop music.”Check their latest offering on The Mastermind Records’ fourth release.
Release info A Side: "Save our Souls" is the latest release from Camberley's Vital Elements that combines dark melodic vibes with a stomping dance floor sound. This tune is a journey through modern drum and bass influences, uniting deep sub bass lines with a heady mix of breaks.
AA side: "Finish Him" is another gem from Vital Elements, syndicating trippy synth combinations with a cacophony of dirty bass lines, not forgetting the strategically placed film samples which makes this one another must for the record box.
Kenny Ken and DJ Hype have been supporting 'Save our souls' in the clubs and DJ Hype has given it a spin on his weekly show on Kiss 100. It looks as though this release will confirm The Mastermind Records as the home of some of the scenes newest and freshest talents.
This Will be the Forth release from The Mastermind Records, but the first with Nu Urban Music, with many more to follow. Check out www.themastermindrecords.com for more information.
