Armin's trance mega-label ASOT is very active at the moment. One of the more recent releases contains two new tracks by EnMass...
:: EnMass - CQ / So Please :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT028
A: CQ 'CQ', or 'Seek You', begins minimally with a basic kick and not much else so you;re left pretty much in the dark as to which direction the track is heading. A fairly lively bassline helps to provide some clues, drawing your interest and providing a good amount of momentum. The track begins to take shape after the first of quite a few breaks - toughened synths form some chord progressions and the swirling beginnings of melody. The melody kicks of properly after a longish breakdown and its very nice to listen to. The notes are blended together and merge into a melodic soundscape making for a smooth, dreamy and flowing track. There is a breakbeat section and yet another break which are used to progress things in subtle ways before we reach the end of the track. Melodically, the track is a nice piece and well worth a good listen, but otherwise don't expect to be inspired.
B: So Please The track begins with an airy, ambient intro and then jumps into life with a perky kick and strong electro bass. Some nice sounding synths begin to emerge, but before they can get any stronger, the track takes an incredibly vocal turn. Pretty random trance lyrics - I had to check I still had an ASOT record on my deck - they just go on and on and on. Then on some more. There is an attempt at a melodic hook, but its drowned out by the constant vocal line and the bassline eventually just gets annoying as its very prominent and noticeable. If I had listened to this side first I wouldn't have bothered with the other side. Shocking.
Conclusion:
'CQ' deserves a 6 or 7 because its a nice, melodic track which doesn't try to be something special, but makes sure it gets the main parts right. 'So Please' shouldn't be on this vinyl.
