Finally Cordovan gets an artist album out, after years as a composer for commercials for Nike, Converse and Amnesty. What does he bring to the table?

Cordovan – Cordovan (Lunaticworks)

Cordovan is what you call a well-versed man. His real name is Greg Reeves and he lives and works in California. You probably know his sounds or his work but you don’t know that he is behind it. He runs Cordovan Music, they make music for company advertisements, film or video games and his client list includes a varied list of companies. They include Nike, Converse, Amnesty Intl and many others. He also has some projects with some musicians in the works for 2005 and to say that he is very busy would be an understatement.

1.Magma

We start out with a trumpet and then a bass guitar joins in, giving it that almost Gilles Peterson style jazz or rare groove. The track has some gloriously melodic keyboard riffs added and the track is very warm. The drumbeats at the back give it some solid structure and that with the guitar, give it the drive. Everything here is easy on the ears, nothing too harsh, nothing too complicated, which is a joy for me because I’m usually listening to 5 new CDs a week and the genres are varied. It uses seagulls’ samples about halfway into it, which is certainly something that you don’t see everyday. The track then gets this funky organ riff that sits near the back but it takes your focus. Nothing much changes from now till the end, it just reinforces the things that have already been brought in.

2.Gamma

“Gamma” starts with some echoed drums and the tempo is much quicker. A noise comes in and out, spacey type star wars sounds here. Some nice cool keyboards join in, you still get that jazzy feel. It is really different from what I’m used to but I always welcome new directions.

3. Lacuna I

This is more of an interlude, the track is not even a minute long but it breaks the flow. You hear icy keyboards and what sounds like an organ at the back and no vocals. I like it, creativity is abound.

4.Blue Goo

Funky jazz is the name of the game and the track starts with solid drums, which are slow and a guitar is behind it all, using little stabs for maximum effect. A keyboard is brought in and the track reminds me of Seinfeld with the effects at times. It is sunnier and not as icy as the previous interlude. The whole song comes together actually quite nicely, even though, a lot of things are going on at once and it is hard to keep track. A trumpet is then brought in and it fuels the madness that this track has become.

5.TK421

The use of the bass guitar and piano coupled with the fun loving feeling of the track, remind me heavily of Lemon Jelly at times. The guitar is driving and deep and the track still retains its nice cheerful feeling. Trumpets come in and immediately throw a jazz feel into the song. It is incredibly different from your usual song but it is calming and well done. Some amazing riffs are used near the end of the song and I’d like to know exactly how they were created because it keeps the mind going.

6.Lacuna II

This is interlude number two here, just to break up the flow again. It starts with what sounds like a boat horn with some effects, which serves well to break the flow.

7. Fun with Sophie

We start with this eerie Alfred Hitchcock type feeling with a bell but then the drums kick in with some wave sounds in the background. A piano then enters and it has this laid-back funk with I like tremendously. The song is really always jazz-fusion at times but the piano or keyboard does the work for the song and moves it from point A to point B. The song is fun loving like Lemon Jelly’s work and I’m more than happy to have a creative album, rather than some boring tripe.

8.Sidewinder

This is a real different song for me. It uses a nice drum line with some real crazy effects and it is so hard to accurately describe, you need to check this out yourself, it is really mind-blowing.

9.Skinny Girl

This starts with taps then an organ riff comes in and then the drum line takes shape. It is really slow and really laidback but it has this subtle funk involved, which I really enjoy. “Skinny Girl” is orchestral jazz in simpler form, it does not use that much orchestra but the riff reminds you of it and something from the 1950’s at times.

10.Lacuna III

This is the 3rd and final interlude. It sounds like you are in a cave and you are hearing echoes. The interlude is exactly half a minute and I think it is the best of the 3 interludes.

11. Black Rock Dub

It starts with a dub vocal and some echoed drumbeats that contain a backing fierce groove around the song. I like the song because it is not over the top jazz but still has that jazz sentiment. Some horns come in from the background and the track builds on those horns but the drums are still the focus. The track is nothing complex but nothing simple either.

12. Sneaky’s Beat

The album ends off here with “Sneaky’s Beat”. The song here is truly Gilles Petersonesque, with the subtle horns, the funky drums and just a nice warm overall impression. It ends the album on a nicer note.

Conclusion:
The album contains a lot of strong points and a lot of well-done tracks but it does not seem to come together like an album should. If you love Jazz, then this is definitely an album for you but if you don’t, I might use a bit of caution. Cordovan is very talented, that’s obvious but the tracks seem all too individualistic and not as album flowing as I wish. Still a decent effort
