After some quiet time, Menno de Jong hits back after his massive track 'Guanxi' with a new alias and a new production, ‘Second Thoughts’…
Quoting myself (bizarrely), “Menno De Jong has done a splendid job here - I can't wait to hear what more he has to offer!”. Well, I was made to wait, six months in fact, but what I hoped has turned out to be true as this new production demonstrates!
:: Sayla – Second Thoughts :: Dedicated :: DED009
1) Second Thoughts (Original Mix) The Original Mix kicks off with a meaty beat and an active bassline which has a slight retro sound to it, so from the start things are already being noticed. The initial sections build and blend together a mix of small synthy parts, all playing and adding their own subtle touches of melody and atmosphere. It is these constructs of sound, filled with subtlety, that helps define Menno’s excellent style. This sound is built upon and strengthened and eventually, a crisp synth lead begins to play a stabbed, but not harshly so, hook which adds a driving element to the track. The contrast between these driven sections and the blend of gentle melody created in the calmer sections is excellent and adds a lot of character to the track. A testament to Menno’s excellent production ability.
2) Second Thoughts (Octagen Remix) Octagen’s take on the track begins with a stark contrast to the original. A breakbeat pattern loops, along with some synthesized female “aahhs”. A quietly bassy synth joins in and helps to remind you what lies in store and then before you know it, a strong and snappy kick accompanied by a big, round bass jump right on in and really get things moving. You’re given a few minutes to adjust to this sudden influx of energy and then the track begins to develop. A quiet and synthy breakdown gives rise to a melody played by the crisp (and now tranced up) lead. This time though, the lead responds to the backing chord changes, thus becoming purely melodic. It has to be said, the sound is beautiful. Whilst upping the tempo, Octagen has worked in some wonderful melodic sounds, chord changes and pads. Add to this the lead melody and the result is awesome to listen to.
Conclusion:
Another 8 for Menno de Jong! Two great tracks – the original, filled with many small and subtle elements to form a wonderfully crafted piece and the remix by Octagen with generous helpings of gorgeous melodic sounds. Wicked trance.
