2005 looks to continue with the rebirthing trend of old classics that 2004 seems to have begun. Mike Koglin’s 1998 dance anthem ‘The Silence’ has been given the 2005 treatment. We have a remix by Will Holland, a brand new re-working by Mike Koglin himself and we’re treated to Matt Darey’s sought after ‘Tekara’ remix…!
‘The Silence’ was one of the first big trance anthems to catch my attention back in 1998. All the memories come flooding back now as it is given an invigorating makeover for 2005. I’ve said before that this is a highly controversial area – the remaking and remixing of past classics and anthems generates extreme scepticism and, more often than not, the results fail to impress. Here however, Mike Koglin himself has gone ahead to rework the track with Will Holland adding a fresh perspective so its looking promising. Not forgetting, the remixes have been very well received from a number of big names including Armin van Buuren, Above & Beyond, Eddie Halliwell, Andy Bagguley, Adam White and Lange, along with support on radio stations such as Kiss and Galaxy.

A1: The Silence 2005 Mike Koglin’s own rework of this classic starts out with a moody, snappy kick. Moving forward, layers of percussion, some gritty backing synths and a springy bassline join in. Echoes of the original classic vocal can be heard and make you yearn for more of what you know is already proven to be a great track. Constant lines of synth build up in the background and create atmospheric tension until the first small break brings in the first hints of that quality main melodic hook. Each section brings with it a new build up and the sounds begin to get quite intense as you hit the main breakdown. Koglin has aimed for severe tension and apprehension towards the main sections of the track. The sublime melody is filtered in before spreading out before you and drenching you with massive waves of tranced up synth. It doesn’t drop in here, however. Instead it cuts down to beat, bass and a cut down, coarse version of the melody and the track begins on another mission of build up. Its only until after the final breakdown and one last incredible build up that the track drops back into the full on melody at maximum power. Totally worth the wait I think. This can’t fail to turn dance floors into raging infernos.
B1: The Silence 2005 (Will Holland Remix) This remix takes a more traditional approach and gently builds towards a basic beats / percussion section before adding bass and other synthy little elements. There is a melodic build up sooner than expected in this initial section where a nice trancey synth dabbles with note from the main melody and you can feel it coming on in the near future. The breakdown continues to play with these trancey synths and instead of synth driven melody, a piano jumps in and plays another variation of the main chord progression. I love pianos. The breakdown persists and now we’re treated to a synth build up which drops you into a sea of synth playing an arpeggiated version of the melody. All of these different ways to play it all sound great. Just to make sure the main synth doesn’t get lonely, the piano joins in to back it up. The piano continues to make its mark in a breakbeat section which basically acts as a breather before one final main section of synth filled goodness.
B2: The Silence 2005 (Matt Darey ’98 Mix) The final track on this vinyl is a remix Matt Darey did back in 1998 which turned into a bit of a collectors item due to limited availability and a lot of bootlegging. Now this sought after piece is being made available to all those who missed it the first time around. It’s a very chilled and laid back piece, with ambient pads and samples used heavily throughout. The main driving aspect is the breakbeat which is at the heart of the track. A long and ambient breakdown precedes the main section which features the original synths playing the original melody and some great booming, old skool bass. If you did miss this the first time round and are a fan of the original, then this track alone is a good enough reason to pick up this vinyl!
Conclusion:
A great piece of vinyl offering an excellent remake of this classic track. Will Holland’s remix follows closely behind – it’s a very good effort with some new ideas but doesn’t quite keep the classic feeling of the original. That said, they’re both excellent new tracks and Mike Koglin’s rework especially will ignite dancefloor after dancefloor.
