Hot on the heels of the one amazing release and one so-so release, Kanpai Records releases another CD, this is one based on the works of legendary artist/composer Kitaro.
November 2004 - Chilled CD of the Moth
Reinterpretations - Inspired By the works of Kitaro (Kanpai Records)
Kitaro is a legend in the music scene but sadly, he is not as well known as Jean Michel Jarre or Brian Eno but his contribution to the scene ranks up there with both of the said artists. Kitaro is originally from Japan and he has won a grammy award, so some artists have decided to create some reinterpretations of his works. These are remixes or reworks of Kitaro’s 2003 CD called “The Sacred Journey of Ku-Kai” on Domo Records.
1.AudioMoe – Crystal Tears 2.Turbotito – Michi 3.Inside the Sun – Theme from Silk Road 4.Peas – Beat Break 5.Timmy The Terror – Shizuku 2.0 6.Appogee – Kuu 7.Occidental – Tienshan 8.Inside the Sun – Shizuku 9.Peas – Low Pass Dub 10.Inside the Sun – Mercury 11.Occidental – Fairy of Water 12.Stephen Haupfleur – Cocoro
“Reinterpretations” begins on more of a harmonic electronica with “Crystal Tears”, which uses a beautiful sample and I’m not quite sure how it was made but add to that, some splashing waves, it is pure genius. “Michi” is another strong electronica track that makes great use of the drum machine and it really dawns upon you at this moment that Kitaro must be a true genius, in order for these remixes to sound so good. The track is done so well, I find it hard to pinpoint what sample was actually used but only two tracks in and the CD has already grabbed me by my coattails.
“Theme from Silk Road” is a very powerful song and I cannot understand why the mainstream dance media has pushed crap compilations on the buyers for many years and neglected brilliant stuff like this. This uses a traditional Japanese sound to start and it is almost tear inducing because it is so good. I’m a huge fan of this and then the electronic effects and the bassline kick in and this just takes the mind away. Music needs to go back to this simplicity with such raw power, which this CD contains. We know head to one of my favorite tunes from one of my favorite albums from recent months. We are talking about the genius of Peas, who released an album called “Filters” on Kanpai and it is a must have for electronic music fans. Beat Break got a big break in recent times, it was used in the biggest show on North American television “Crime Scene Investigation” or as we call it CSI. The track is beautifully made up of broken beats and excellent instrumentation and it continues the genius of this album.
Shizuku 2.0 starts with beautiful Japanese sounds with a subtle drumline but the instrumentation, which is probably authentically Japanese just takes the mind to another place. It works so well and then a quirky beat is added to it, I think it is Kitaro modernized but I like it because it does not try to do too much and the instruments really give it a gliding feeling. We now go into track #6 called “Kuu” and it uses more authentic Japanese sounds, which are really calming and then a slow moving drumline is brought in and the odd effect is brought in. Apogee lets the strongest track elements stay and does not try to alter them in any way, thus keeping the best parts. I think he uses the old adage, which is “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. A sample from a robot is brought in but the original power of the original sample is not lost and I give massive props to Apogee for letting it be.
“Tienshan” is another of those powerful instrumentals and this song is led by a beautiful piano line with more of an orchestra feel at the back. It reminds me of a film score, well a really good one and you see why Kitaro has won a Grammy and a Golden Globe. The music is just spot on and just done right and it pushes such harmony. Music is one of those things that transcends language, if no spoken words are used and this is a great example of it. “Shizuku” is song number eight and if I remember correctly, the bells that are used in these songs are authentic bell sounds from Japan Temples. This completely takes the song to a more hip direction and the song uses powerful instruments, which seems all the remixers or reworkers have left and they just have added a drumline, some effects but they were all smart to allow Kitaro’s genius to shine through.
“Low Pass Dub” was my second favorite song from the genius album called Filter, which you must get, it shows how lesser known artists are making better music than the big boys from Europe. This continues the harmony and journey that this compilation has been and this is probably play for months on my home stereo. This is very good and it makes great use of dub with a filtered voice, who knew dub could sound so fresh. “Inside The Sun” is another reinterpretation by a different artist called “Mercury”, it is a even more subtle version and even nicer chilled version. I love it because it allows the original instruments to shine thru, while making a modern version of it.
“Fairy of Water” is the 2nd last song, it is the most electronic oriented song of them all and it keeps the raw power of the original work, which I’ve not heard but the instrumentation is so strong and so well done. “Cocoro” is the final song to this brilliant journey that this CD has become, it is another well made, well done, very incredible song that just makes you stand up and say “Wow!”. I wish more artists in Europe made stuff like this, maybe they should try to use some Kitaro.
Conclusion:
Incredible, Powerful and very Beautiful, this shows that Kitaro’s works are criminally neglected by the main media and I like this so much that I’m going to track down some of his works. Thank you Kanpai for allowing the open minded to experience some new mind blowing music. Get this CD, it is completely forward thinking and mind bending, you can thank me later for it.
