The sixth release on the Fenology label comes from German mastermind Alex M.O.R.P.H., who has been bringing us quite a few gems under several of his aliases recently. His former single on Fenology, 'Flaming Clouds', was received quite well, so let's see what this one's all about...
As said, Alex has been releasing a wagonload of remixes and tracks during the last few months. His remixes for Ozone - 'Rock', Mat Silver & Tony Burt - 'Waimea', Exertion - 'Partizan' and Talla 2XLC - 'The Air That I Breathe' have been doing the rounds for a while now, and his special Synthetic Empire remixes for ATB - 'Marrakech' and Realm F. vs Rankey - 'Nairobi' were released this year as well.
He also produces under the name Arc In The Sky, having released the massive 'Vainquer' on the Discover label earlier this year. Remixes for Moonrush - 'Risky Business', Woody van Eyden - 'Unfinished Symphony', Icone - 'Astra' and Deep Drive - 'The Rider' (coming up on the Recover label) have all been played by most of the big jocks. The Scirocco guise (also on Fenology) brought life to the cleverly named 'Scirocco', which also included an Alex M.O.R.P.H. remix.
Now that we're done with the info, let's see if this one can beat 'Flaming Clouds'...
A-side: Original Mix Kicking off with some crispy, trademark M.O.R.P.H percussion, the track builds itself up a bit using some clever effects and a nice bassline along the way. The whole structure sounds very full, mostly because of the perfectly fitting percussion and a nice use of a tingly synthline during the build-up. A mini-break appears, introducing some subtle female choir sounds, which are barely noticeable during the rest of the mix, but certainly add something to it. A prelude to the main melody enters by using a string sound behind the percussion, just until the main break enters... Silence appears, after which some very cool ambient-like sounds appear. A simple melody is being played at first sight, but then gets accompanied by the female choir sounds we heard before. At all of the sudden, the main melody comes in, loosening filters, ready to kick in in it's hugest form. The hands-in-the-air factor of this part of the track is unbelievably high; the main melody just works out very nicely, ensuring the crowd to go wild any time. The climax itself enters in a subtle way, but will certainly work out on any self-respecting dancefloor. The build-down is rather long (over 2 minutes), but that's something we can live with, can't we...
B1: Fred Baker Remix Belgian producer Fred Baker serves us with his remix on side B. His Water Planet guise (together with Terry Bones) has had quite a hit with the single 'Introspection', that has been released on Vandit earlier this year. Together with M.I.K.E., he also runs the Active Sight guise, and Fred has also released a bunch of cool tracks on Captivating Sounds and Scanner Records. Dark Alliance (together with Terry Bones and Greg Nash) - 'Genetic / Vibration' is a more techy oriented track, and has been released on Alphabet City a while ago. Check out Fred's latest news by reading the article mentioned in the Links section below. As you can hear directly from the beginning, this remix takes on a different approach to the whole track, by bringing the melodies from the original in during the build-up. The overall atmosphere is a little more laidback as well. The percussion sounds very clear, and guides us right into a first mini-break, in which the female vocal snippets are being introduced once again. One of the cool things of this remix is that the main melody plays along with all this all the time. Accompanying synths and a nice string part guide all the elements towards the first breakdown. Percs disappear, making place for a few remaining synths. The main melody gets built up by tiny bits, being guided along by a crispy broken beat percussion. Energy is being pumped into the track, creating a superb, but still rather chilled out climax. After all this, the build-down enters, giving the DJ the opportunity to mix in the next gem.
B2: Dub Mix Reading the word 'Dub', you would think that this is just an edit of the Original mix without the female vocal snippets... wrong. Taking a little less than 5:30, this mix is being built up in a rather fast way. Most of the elements are the same as the ones used in the Original, but there's one thing in here that might surprise you... The main melody has been left out! The main break consists of the vocal snippets, but then becomes a kind of industrial sounding, more techy track, using a darkish sound. One of the synth from the original comes in, playing a bit of the original melody, but than suddenly disappears to make place for a bunch of FX's and the bassline. The bassdrum kicks in again, creating an odd, but still kind of cool vibe. Some may say all this is kind of boring, but I kind of like it because it's just a cool extra thing on this vinyl.
Conclusion:
Let's answer the question I asked at the beginning of this review: did this beat 'Flaming Clouds'? Oh yes it did. The main melody in the Original mix is cool hands in the air stuff, while the Fred Baker remix does it the other way around, building up the main melody throughout the whole track. Very well though out! The Dub Mix is a little odd, but still kind of cool if you don't want to hear the main melody anymore for some reason. All in all a tight release on Fenology again, let's hope their future releases will continue the tradition!
