ASOT have been pushing the releases out for Christmas and theres a plethora of new tracks available. Heres the first of the bunch...
:: John O'Callaghan Pres. Mannix - Mercury :: A State Of Trance :: ASOT032
A: Mercury (Original Mix) The Original Mix of 'Mercury' is fronted by an ambient synthscape laced with crystalline sfx. Definitely a pleasant way to start a track. Once we see the inevitable beat and bassline, the track develops into something which sounds very similar to Outback's style - lots of coarse electronic synths and sfx backing up the lead elements. These disappear for the ambient breakdown, led by a small and soft synth. Theres also a breakbeat section thrown in, which is pretty much average. The main sections of this track are dominated by fairly cutting and heavily sustained synths and to be honest, they grate on your ears somewhat. This is helped by some softer pads providing backing chords but the synth always comes back into your head and annoys you.
B: Mercury (Arizona Remix) After a minute or so of Arizona's remix, the minimal beat and pokey bassline is strengthened by a fiercer, more jittery bassline and the track jumps into action. Arizona starts simple with the synths too, but builds things up and introduces thicker and fuller sounding synths to help lead the way forward. The results is a smoothly flowing sound which glides into the breakdown. The very airy and ambient breakdown gives way eventually to more of what we've just heard - not much innovation but nice to listen to nonetheless.
Conclusion:
The Original Mix of 'Mercury' is a bit disappointing, depending on how you're affected by the lead synth. Arizona's remix is much nicer with lots of synths and a nice, gentle, flowing feeling.
