By reading the name of the label, you'll notice that this is something just a little harder than normal. P.H.A.T.T. is a guise by Pierre Pienaar, a producer from Namibia who has already had quite a few banging releases in the past... So, what's this one like?
Pierre also produces under the ReBirth (harddance) and Pienaar & Bamford guises. Four P.H.A.T.T. tracks have already seen the light in the past: 'Let The Rhythm Take Control' and 'Infinity' were released on Phantom Trax last year, and the 'Hysteria / Funk You' EP was released on Audio Rehab. He has also remixed quite a few names already, namely artists like Sunblind, Sol Ray and Dark By Design.
A-side: Original
There's no doubt that this is going to be a softie, because the hardish kick and agile percussion already take over the sound spectrum directly at the beginning. Gloomy background FX, a tight use of drums and a lil' snareroll jam us right into the immense bassline, which kicks in with an enormous amount of power coming out of it. A fast repeating synthline guides the track onwards, by itself unleashing a very nice drive during the build-up. Chords are being changed every once in a while with the percs getting fuller and fuller, just until the main breakdown enters. Calm string sounds are being pulled to the front, backed by some bleepy synth notes. Unlike the main build of the track, the break tries to bring in a more serene approach. And it works! The strings are being accompanied by a relatively simple piano melody, making you wonder what will happen next... Still highly filtered, a very driving melody enters, playing along with the piano a bit. At all of the sudden, it unleashes itself to its fullest potential by adding a gigantic portion of strength to it. Insane stuff! With the percs and powerful bassline, this will just destroy anything in its path. Now that I'm hearing all the elements together, the track reminds me just a little bit of Alphazone productions. The piano sound returns during the climax, accentuating the contrast that was created during the break. A damn fine track.
B-side: P.H.A.T.T. Powerdrive Mix
It took me a while to find out what the precise differences were compared with the original. The build-up is more or less the same, but the main difference comes in when listening to the break: the piano has been left out! And that's, quite frankly, the only dissimilarity with the other mix. The melody uses the same synth, the bassline doesn't differ, etcetera. I'm not sure why they put this mix on side B, I think a full remix would have been better.
Conclusion:
The Original is a very powerful piece of hardtrance. The huge bassline, driving synths and big melody make this something that will surely cause a lot of damage around the world's harder floors. The second release on Monster Hard will also be a P.H.A.T.T. track, this time called 'Levitation'. Check out Pierre's site (listed below) to listen to a sample of it.
