Koma and Bones start off TCR's 2005 campaign, what new territory are the trio exploring now?
Koma and Bones – Speedfreak (TCR)
After a tremendous as 2004 for TCR, Rennie Pilgrem’s label keeps going where no breaks label dared to go and with JDS, Roxiller, Koma and Bones and with Rennie Pilgrem at the helm, it has succeeded in pushing breaks to a wider audience. Well it is now 2005 and what a way to start off the year, than to add the favorite Northern English Breakbeat trio, known as Koma and Bones, who consists of Chris Kirkwright, Andy Duckmartin and Jude Sebastion. They have a new label that you should all look out for this year called Burrito, which will showcase unsigned talent. They have always innovated rather than duplicated and their sound is constantly fresh and always exciting.
A.Speedfreak B.Now’s the Time
Speedfreak
The first track is a nasty breakbeat number with that slight tech element, which always draws a big fan in yours truly. The bassline is absolutely filthy and the track contains this tremendous drive, which just hooks you in early and takes you with it. The song contains a sample that talks about speed and the question is when he will stop. The throbbing bassline coupled with some spaced out effects, that just is icing on top of the cake. It is truly a peaktime floorfiller for the DJ’s Arsenal, and if used in the right situation, I think it could take the roof off the building. I like the techy elements that Koma and Bones has brought into their tracks of late, it shows they are forward thinking and not content with being one dimensional artists. This is why they are completely different from the rest of the world because they want to explore new territory.
Now’s The Time
I thought that Speedfreak would be hard to top for this vinyl release but I was dead wrong. Now’s The Time is an energetic track that goes into top gear from the start of the track. It contains more tech elements, which is coupled more in the bassline, it is also dark as heck. The first vocal is Fuck, then some weird language, which is only a few words. A robot vocal comes in later, saying “Now’s the Fucking Time” and with the nasty bassline, this should be another deejay favorite. An angry riff is built into the track and it comes really apparent after about three minutes in and it gives the track, more of an edge. Koma and Bones built these two tracks as peaktime dancefloor destroyers and you know deejays love to have those in their arsenal of tricks. The track really just continues in the menacing mold till the end, usually the B Side is just an add on but it is not the case here
Conclusion:
Exceptional work from Koma and Bones, who deliver two peaktime techy breakbeat tracks. Speedfreak is more filthy but Now’s the Time is more energetic, each of them will do the desired dancefloor damage. A truly excellent way to start off 2005 for TCR, but all the journalists are waiting in anticipation for the JDS album, which if it is anything like their vinyl releases, should be off the hook.
