Fenology label owner Woody van Eyden returns using his own name again. During the last couple of months, he has been busy with a lot of side projects, but now it's time for a follow-up to the huge 'Unfinished Symphony'...
Woody van Eyden - 'Unfinished Symphony' was released in late 2003, being the first track on the Fenology label. Quite a few releases followed, including tracks by Alex M.O.R.P.H., Scirocco and Moonrush.
Woody himself took credit for the fifth release on the label under his Van Eyden alias. A vocal trancer called 'The 1' (together with Susanne Webb) was the result, accompanied by remixes from Sonicvibe, DJ Precision and Danny Wild vs. PeeWee.
Time to check this one out...
A-side: Original Funaki Mix
'Unfinished Symphony' had a Funaki Mix on side A as well. This is basically an alias for Woody, with which he has also done a remix for Jezper - 'Monastery Hill' and Mindcrusher - 'Vision05' (an upcoming release on the FEN label).
Quite a bit of percussion and a dark synthline are the things we get to hear first when the needle hits the first groove. A decent kick and a solid bassline get added along the way, making the build-up sound a lot techier than earlier productions on the label. Subtle melodies are being played on the background all the time, coming in, disappearing, and making place for even more rhythms. The dark sound from the start of the track remains on the background, but is being pushed backwards by the rest of the soundscape in the track soon. The build itself also contains quite a few mini-breaks: the percs fade away, a building melody enters, a drum roll, and then the track just proceeds on with the new element. Surely this has been done before, but in this track it is more inventive: at first sight you might think, eh, what's this, why aren't we getting to the main breakdown yet? But if you listen more carefully, everything is being built up in a rather cool way.. One of them ways being a repeating, saw-sounding string which guides us right into the main break... Hang on there, 'cause it's not what you would expect.. Suddenly, a female voice enters, saying 'This is all rising, pure, synergy'. You might find it interesting to know that the track's rather complex title is just the chemical way of writing Synergy (well, it seems it is). When the vocal fades out, we get treated by a lovely piece of classical music: you can just feel the emotion flowing out of there, superb! A tiny little melody starts to play behind it, suddenly becoming a full grown monster synth during the climax. All the elements get together again, creating a blasting climax with some nice chord changes along the way. The climax does kick in rather suddenly, but that just enhances the goosebumps I think.. This track has a different sound to it, and I like it!
B1: Darren Christian Remix
The first remix on the flip! I don't know much about Darren, but if I look at the records he has produced until now, it seems like he has a very versatile sound.. Let's see what he did with this one.
Alright, you can instantly hear that this mix will take on a more techy approach. Typical techno-ish percussion, a blazing, repeating bassline and a crispy kick are being served on our plates first. A backing bassy sound starts playing along, and some of the FX from the A-side mix are being brought in in an altered way. The saw sounding string returns as well, flowing quite nicely with the rest of the build. Yeah, if you like techno, I think you'll dig this mix as well... It's all kind of concentrated on the percs and bassline until now, but that changes a bit when the main break enters... A few hints to the other mix are audible, a muted kick enters, and the return of the saw synth is imminent. No big, uplifting melodies here, just plain banging using the bassline and drumlines. This is one of those tracks that would work very well when building up your set: there's quite a bit of energy in it, and I'm sure it'll mix in fine with other techy stuff.
B2: Genix Remix
Genix is one of the co-founders of the TRR label, together with Andy Bagguley. With this same person, he has released two tracks under their 'Oracle' alias. 'ReConnected' was released under the Genix alias, being the follow-up to earlier tracks like 'Solar Planet'.
Seems like we got ourselves a pure trancey remix here! Right at the beginning, a distinct bassline and some percs are building us up towards to a bunch of spooky sounding background FX. The buildup synthie from the other mixes returns as well, but this time in a different way: it's been placed more on the background, with the bassline changing it's chords on top of it. Vocal snippets enter every now and then, being sent into oblivion by a new repeating melody. To be honest, the build hasn't really interested me until now: I've heard this sound before, nothing too innovative here. Oh well, the break keeps a portion of the classical melody from the A-side mix, which is quite nice. The melody has been altered in a rather cool way, there's quite a bit of energy coming from it. The main climatic part didn't really do it for me: it does flow, but tends to get just a little boring during some parts. All in all a very trancey remix here, definitely check it out if you like uplifting stuff.
Conclusion:
The Original Funaki Mix blew me away! It took me a few listens, but I can now fully enjoy the build-up as well. The breakdown is amazing with the classical components, and will surely raise every available hand when played live. The melody and climax reminded me of trance that was made a few years ago, and that's a positive thing!
The remixes are both ok, with the Darren Christian one being the better of the two. The bassline works well, and the percs do their job indeed. As said, the Genix remix is just a bit too 'plain', but will surely attract some of you lot!
