Kiss that Records brings out more tribal with their 3rd release but does it measure up to the quality of their previous stuff?
Chicola featuring Mutabaruka – Smoking and Blowin (Kiss that Ass Records)
Belgium based Kiss That Ass Records have come out with their third release and it is by Chicola, who is supposed to be the Isreali version of Steve “Tribal King” Lawler. I’ve never heard of Chicola till now but I’m always up for listening to new things. The vocalist on this record is a man named Mutabaruka, who is apparently a Rastafarian poet who hosts his own show on IRIE.FM in Jamaica. Ziv Shalit (Owner of KTA) is trying to push his funky ass tribal sound to the world and his Kiss That Ass Records label, had achieved tremendous success with the first two releases back in 2004. So this is the first track release from “the everything funky” label for 2005.
Chicola featuring Mutabaruka – Smoking and Blowin (Kiss that Ass Records)
1.KTA Flight Mix 2.Ziv’s Zulu Mix 3.Zulu Dub
1.KTA Flight Mix
The track starts with some driving drums and instantly throws you into tribal land as I call it. Some echoed drums then join the fray, it instantly reminds me of Lawler’s Nubreed 3 CD2, or at least the tail end of it. You hear a deep voice talking saying “Smokin” and the track has so much drive about a minute in. The kick then comes in and it is more funky and it adds that extra octane to the track, which is very good. The poet part says “We are going to do something tonite, poetry without the music” and the track continues in that deep dark mold that I really like. The track about 3 minutes in, loses that dark edge that it started with, which loses some originality points as far as I’m concerned. If you have not realized it yet, I’m a huge fan of dark tribal nastiness and this had some of that mold but it lost it. I like the vocal here because it uses a deep voice balanced around some filthy drums. It is nearly dark, deep and nasty but not quite and that is a shame and it makes this writer very sad at times. The song is obviously in the Lawler mold, for the tracks in the first hour that he would play. As you approach the end of the track, the vocal is altered in that vocodered Steve Lawler manner and if you are going to borrow elements from someone, you might as well do it from the best. It is certainly a solid track, just not as dark as I would like but then again, I’m picky about tribal house.
2.Ziv’s Zulu Mix
Ziv Shalit (aka the owner of KTA) throws in his mix here for good measure. This mix is much slower and uses a more funky tribal house edge and the drums are the biggest difference for this mix. It seems that we have gone from Steve Lawler mean tribal to more Danny Tenaglia’s style of tribal house, that housy tribal with the trumpets at times. The track here loses its edge that it had with the KTA Flight Mix and it goes into a deadend. The Zulu mix just pisses me off because I know labels are always giving people some variety but are you going to make Lawleresque mean tribal ? or you going to make Tenagliaesque housy tribal?. I think Ziv should pick one or the other but the variety should impress some people, just not this writer sadly but full marks to Ziv for attempting something different.
3.Zulu Dub
This continues more of the same and it does’nt matter if you add the vocal or not, this mix just grates my nerve because I like my tribal, dark and dirty and mean and this does’nt do either. This is more funky house with added tribal, nice try Ziv but please pick one or the other here. Even if you like the tribal, the vocal makes this track and if you take it out, the track is just lifeless and goes nowhere and dies an early death.
Conclusion:
The first track had so much promise and you realize that if Ziv can add a little more, he could make another monster of a track. He obviously has the talent but I think he is far more preoccupied with adding that little bit more funk to his tracks. The second mix will be a godsend for Danny Tenaglia fans or if you loved CD 1 of GU 017 – London but it does not wash with me. The dub mix as the third track is just filler and without the vocal, the track is a complete waste of time. If you want dark, mean and nasty tribal, you won’t get it here but if you like your tribal full of variety, then this is for you. So much promise but the follow through leaves a lot to be desired.
