The latest edition to ASOT's Limited family is Signum's remake of his classic 'Second Wave'. Does 'Second Wave' come up trumps the second time around...?
:: Signum - Second Wave 2004 :: A State Of Trance Limited :: ASOTL003
A: Second Wave (Signum's Signal 2004 Remake) 'Second Wave' was a classy tune so it'll be interesting to see if even Signum can make any improvements or enhancements. Well, this remake of 'Second Wave' takes on a very similar structure to the original - initially simple and quiet sections to introduce the track then slow progressive builds to the trancey breakdown. These long sections in the first half of the track don't really do enough and are a little bit boring, also lacking somewhat in the drive department too. However we know from the original that it all starts at the breakdown so onwards! As soon as you hit the breakdown the high powered synths start to make themselves heard. Gradually at first, building up in the background from a synthy haze of sound. Its a quality melodic buildup, no doubt about that and you're begging for it to drop after a minute or so and it does so strongly. So after the initial disappointment, the 2004 remake does manage to deliver!
B1: Come Around Again (DJ Dando & Rob Styles Remix) The first track on the B side of this vinyl is a remix of Signum's 'Come Around Again which came out last year on ASOT. This remix keeps the vocal aspect of things and is driven by a light bassline. The first third of the track is purely vocal and doesn't do much for me. The following breakdown is also fairly uneventful and we see the vocals taking on a more synthy part. The 'main' sections of the track don't feature much in the way of clear cut vocals but they don't feature enough of the superb melody from the original, which is a damn shame. Its there, but its not as prominent and the bassline doesn't follow it as well with regards to chord changes unfortunately.
B2: Second Wave (Original Mix) Not much more to be said about the original - classic tune and you're treated to a copy on this vinyl!
Conclusion:
Overall a worthwhile piece of semi-hard trance. Once the remake gets going its pretty damn good. The remix of 'Come Around Again' isn't all that on the B side, but you get the extra added bonus of the Original Mix of 'Second Wave' to balance things out!
