Oxygen Recordings takes a change in flavour (and artist!) for its fourth release. Read on to see whats changed this time around...
Hmm whats this?! The fourth release on Oxygen is from Fred Numf Vs. Etienne Overdijk, Sander van Doorn has stepped down (for the moment!) from his position of dominance over this label. The sound we're graced with now is deep and a little bit more housey, although there is a trance element deep within it just itching to get out...
:: Fred Numf Vs. Etienne Overdijk Feat. B. Birnie - Hear An Echo :: Oxygen Recordings :: OX004
A: Hear An Echo (Dub Mix) 'Hear An Echo' runs on a quite minimal foundation. Aside from the hefty but simple kick and down to earth percussion, the only other main and ongoing feature is a low and dirty bassline which churns and growls throughout the track. It adds a nice deep feeling and is a great sound to groove to. The progressive house side of the track means that it slowly but surely keeps moving forwards, regularly changing and adding subtle little elements like the processed "Hear An Echo" female vocal, the quite acidy line in the background and eventually a lead synth which posses a smooth yet quite raw sound - thats where the trancey feel lies. There are also a lot of little fx popping and blipping too so theres always a sense of activity in the track. Overall a nicely groovy and laid back piece.
AA: hear An Echo (Original Mix) The Original Mix of 'Hear An Echo' has a slightly stronger percussive element than the Dub Mix and the bassline, while still very present, isn't as thick. This, of course, is to allow for the full vocals which are present in this mix. This track is very much similar in length and structure to the Dub Mix, aside from a nice and echoed female vocal section just before the main breakdown. This one carries a little bit more feeling and ambience due to the vocal element.
Conclusion:
Definetly one to groove to, 'Hear An Echo' is a nifty little crossover between allsorts of styles - predominantly house oriented, theres also a techy edge and a hint of trance too! Plus you get some nice vocals too. Nice, groovy, easy going.
