The Germany based hitfactory Fenology just keeps on delivering. Most of their releases found their way inside many top DJ's recordboxes, being played all over the world. Mindcrusher is another guise by trance maestro Woody van Eyden, so don't forget to check this one out...
After releasing the superb 'Unfinished Symphony' and 'Si-N+R-Je' tracks under his own name, Woody has created a new alias to bring us yet another piece of uplifting, energetic trance. A trancy Alex M.O.R.P.H. remix and a more progressive oriented Andrew F. remix are included as well to complete the package.
A1 - Original Funaki Mix Sparkling hats, a thrusting kickdrum and some subtle placed background FX take care of the drive during the build of the track. An innovative sounding, crispy bassline ensures that the low frequencies are filled with fun as well, inducing a more deep approach to the rest of this mix. The bass is being cranked up even more by bringing in a rhythm that reminds me of the basses in Woody's 'Si-N+R-Je' a bit; pulsating and repeating beams of bass are injecting themselves in between the kicks in a very nice way. Small hints to a few melodies are being given out every once in a while, using this rather high and addictive synth sound. With kickdrums rolling and blasting around, a mini-break enters and brings an updated version of the synth-hints we just heard. A repeating rhythm takes care of the rest of the build, changing its tones every few seconds. The main breakdown is a definite 'let's-cut-to-the-chase' break: no endless string melodies, just plain old melody building directly from the beginning... This might sound simple, but in this track it isn't! A clever little melody starts playing at first sight, but soon backing sounds start to emerge, with them including an amazingly well thought out melody that adds an addictive spice to the main melody parts. With the basses and kicks hammering on and on, this creates a very cheering vibe throughout the main climax. Prime time stuff!
B1 - Alex M.O.R.P.H. Remix Alex has been releasing a bunch of his remixes and own tracks on the Fenology label already, including his most recent 'Unification', a track called 'Scirocco' and a few remixes under his Arc In The Sky guise (with his good mates Henry Nix and Matthias Gierth). Trademark M.O.R.P.H. kickdrums and a big portion of agileness are the main components to start this track with. Gated synths, a rolling b-line and a sharp use of numerous gimmicks (including a rather cool, darkish sounding sample that comes back every 15-or-so seconds) make the track nice to listen to during the build-up, which is being enhanced even more by bringing in a synth that is similar to the one used in the Original Funaki Mix. Slight implications to the main melody are being torpeded inside the body of the track, just until the cool darkish sample returns to transport us right inside the main breakdown. No hassle here either, the melody starts playing right away! Alex has done quite a nice job here, teasing us more and more by filtering the melody up and down a few times, creating an utterly tensed mood. Uplifting strings are playing their accompanying melodies as well, and after a kickdrum-mega-attack the track booms into a very nice & euphoric piece of energetic trance.
B2 - Andrew F. Remix After the two more trancy interpretations, it's time for something a little different. Andrew is a resident at the Room At The Top club in the UK, with this remix being his first own production ever released. Starting off with a somewhat lower BPM than the other mixes, you can immediately tell this is going to be something else than the other mixes. Cool tribal percussion sounds, small portions of bass and some very intrigueing FX are the lead-in for the introduction of a very, very taste bassline! A huge array of bass frequencies pulsates throughout the track, changing its tones in clever ways. A nice & chilled synth keeps up with the pace of the track, playing a tiny portion of the chords from the original melody. The bongo percussion and cool use of different hi-hats creates a vibe that reminded me just a little bit of a few tracks by Probspot. With an altered version of the bassline and some odd FX playing at first, the break part brings us a nice share of string sounds. The cute little melody from the build starts playing as well, and is soon being backed by a nice sister-synth and a prelude to the main bassline. With the percs starting to do their work again, you can hear this track would be perfect to start a more trancy / proggy set with. Class!
Conclusion:
Fenology just can't disappoint me it seems. The original of this track has this amazing hookline, the Alex M.O.R.P.H. remix brings an utterly cool and tensed break & climax, and the Andrew F. mix features a very cool and chilled vibe with a classy bassline. Two thumbs up!
