Techy maestro Mac Zimms is making another appearance on 2Play with a brace of twisted and techy goodness...
Mac Zimms is bringing something new to 2Play, building on creating his own sound very well indeed. Carrying on from the tough techy sounds of 'I Feel', Zimms now brings two new tracks, 'Kenetic' and 'Shock', onto the label.
:: Mac Zimms - Kenetic / Shock :: 2Play :: 2PLAY008
A: Kenetic We see a very minimal start with some filtered percussion in the background really jittering away - this gives a sense of coiled up tension waiting to go off and sort of keeps the track poised all the way through. As we continue, the beat is powered up and fuelled by a techno-style hi-hat. The most prominent sound amongst all the techy hits, twists and sfx is a snare which goes off every 4th beat. This is a great little touch, adding character, rhythm and drive with one easy and periodic 'bosh'. The 'lead' here is a gruff and gritty synth that plays a very short and simple rhythm over and over. It creates quite a moody and tension filled atmosphere and is also used well to build up the breakdowns - along with some really twisted synth/sfx builds. This track is all about steady, rhythmic and heavy drive. Very techy with a techno touch - an infectious and addictive sound thats gagging to be played on a huge system!
AA: Shock 'Shock' dives right into a deep techno sound. Not the huge banging type but the deep kind of stuff you might hear Picotto play in part of his sets. The percussion plays a more prominent part than the beat almost, which is interesting. The main element throughout the track has to be the simple sounding synth which stabs out chords over and over in various rhythms, changing regularly along with changes to the structure of the beat and percussion, and also during breakdowns where it becomes a big mass of sound. This synth has a really trippy sound for most of the track and along with the thudding beats it almost becomes hypnotic. This one is for much more devoted techno fans.
Conclusion:
I like this pair of tracks! Mac Zimms has created two different pieces - the first, my favourite, 'Kenetic', is a blend of pure techy sounds with a hint of techno, as it were, creating a tough sound. The second, 'Shock', is really deep and trippy techno for the die-hard techno devotee, unless you have an open mind and are after something quite different. Mac Zimms is definitely one to keep looking out for in the future!
