Half of JDS teams with an unlikely duo for TCR's latest release.
Beauty School – Beatbox Baby (TCR) (RENN3092)
The world has had many odd pairings, the 1986 New York Mets, the Odd Couple, Eminem & Dido and Tiesto & Ferry but they all seem tame compared to this odd group of people. If you have been following TCR’s releases, you know that JDS is made up of Darren Pearce and Julian Napolitano, well as they were working on their new album (slated for release, sometime in 2005), Julian thought he would get creative and get some people together for a project. If you thought you had seen the craziest groups, you ain’t seen nothing yet, throw Julian Napolitano, add Rachael Stewart, one of the singers for the group Fluke and then throw in James from the EMF (yes that’s right). If you have been living in a cave, well the EMF (Ecstacy Mother Fuckers) were a band that got big at times and toured heavily. They are known most for the death of their bandmate Zac Foley due to drugs but I digress. Usually you don’t add such a wide ranging group of people for a single but leave it to Julian, he is sure it will work but will it?
Beauty School - Beatbox Baby (TCR) (RENN3092)
1.Radio Edit (Julian Napolitano Mix) 2.Original Mix 3.Full Length Vocal 4.Dub Mix
1.Radio Edit (Julian Napolitano Mix)
It starts off with funky breakbeat, with the wailing guitar in the background. The vocal is rather different with Rachael Stewart talking about Salvation Army, ACDC, Run DMC but the vocal is so hooky that some will just become addicted to this tune. The Radio Edit is obviously much shorter and headed for radio play but I can see this fitting in on a few dance stations in Canada. The song is aided by swirly sound effects that fit more of a spacey atmosphere. So the easiest way to describe this first song is mayhem, guitars, crazy vocal and crazy atmosphere = different style of tune.
2.Original Mix
The Original Mix starts more slowly because radio edits are usually quick, get to the point and that’s it. The bass is much heavier here and the vocal is echoed in the beginning but the guitar is here as well. The original mix has more of an electro vibe and the vocal is the same until it hits the breakdown, where more riffs are added and the song takes a life of its own. Just after that happens, Stewart’s vocal comes back but it has a familiar tune but it does not use any vocal that was used on this 12” up to this point. She sings the famous chorus, “Don’t push me, cuz I’m trying not to lose myself”. The original mix has a different taste compared to the first one. This is more club friendly and I’d love to see what mayhem this causes in the hands of Timo Maas, Rennie Pilgrem, Meat Katie or Elite Force
3.Full Length Vocal
Now the full length vocal is very different from the original mix but this resembles more of track 1 + some length. The start is nearly the same as the radio edit but there is a breakdown about two minutes in, where it goes to just breakbeat, no guitar or vocal or wailing riffs. After the track comes out of the breakdown, some glorious riff work appears and the vocal does not come back as quickly, even thought this is a full length vocal. The guitar really pushes this mix and without the heavy wailing, I argue that this track would be just ordinary. I like it but the vocal does wear on you at times.
4.Dub Mix
TCR has given something for everyone here. The dub mix is probably the best of the four mixes given so far. The guitar is used with more effect in this mix, maybe that is because the vocal does not come out and hit you like the other mixes do. You can concentrate on what the track really brings without the vocal. This should be more fun for those who loathe the vocal and there will be some who hate this mix because they love the vocal so much. As the track gets going, you get a shock, the vocal is used but its not used as much, so it is technically a dub mix. I like this version more because I’m a big fan of the wailing guitar.
Conclusion:
I like the vocal a bit but it grates my nerves at times. The track is well planned out and should be a favorite on the dancefloor. I think Julian shows what attributes that he has brought to JDS, that have made them unstoppable (wait for their album later this year, it should be one of the best of 2005). I’m different, I’d head immediately for the dub mix but I’d like to see how crowds dig the original mix.
As usual, Check TCR for the latest release dates and latest Gig Lists for their artists. Keep your eyes out for JDS's debut album later this year on TCR
