Known for his “Open Day” tune release on the music scene, this is shaping up to be his year! Get ready for the discovery - Steve May...
Oren: How would you describe yourself in one word?
A: different
Oren: When did you start producing? Who were your early influences before you got connected to EDM music?
A: I got my current computer at the end of 2001 which was finally fast enough to write music! So I started playing around with ideas at the end of 2001 when I should have been studying for my final year of school exams hehe. my early music influences were all rock and punk based bands such as pennywise, oasis, REM, The Living End etc. as i used to play the drums in school bands and stuff like that. early dance music influences were sasha, digweed, timo maas, all the global underground and renaissance cds, then i soon met quite a few of the crew from melbourne. Ivan Gough and Luke chable mainly have helped me out a load and influenced the directions i want to take my music. A mate Carl introduced me to ivan one night when i was learning about mixing at clubs and stuff. i have no idea where i'd be or what i'd be doing without the help of those 3 people!
Oren: Apart from producing, you are also a DJ. How's that coming along?
A: i started djing before i started writing records. when i started listening to mixed comps, i wanted to know how they were mixed, and a friend of mine i met through my brother (james fraser) told me what i needed to do to get into it. I was 16, i bought decks and a mixer and became a vinyl junkie. i have played at quite a few melbourne based nights, and more recently some interstate gigs (Global with Dean Millson in Queensland, and a night put on by the Fabic Crew in adelaide on australia day with Luke Chable and Christopher Lawrence) As for upcoming gigs, i am currently in Canada in the province of Alberta. I'll be DJing with the 3feet deep crew at a party in Saskatoon on the 9th of april, and also a party in Victoria BC on the 30th. i am really looking forward to these gigs, should be awesome fun. I'm also working on some London gigs for May this year as well. Nothing confirmed but i have been contacted by a few different crews about playing at some parties.
Oren: Not many people are aware of the fact that you are a ski instructor. Could you tell us more about your life outside of dance music?
A: i have been skiing since i was about 4 years old! its one of my fav things to do! nothing better than getting up to the mountains, putting on some skiis and ripping the pow or playing in the terrain park and half pipe! i work at a ski resort in canada, just outside of Banff each winter teaching people how to ski. its an awesome job! Next year i hope to have a laptop to so i can keep writing records while i'm here!
Oren: If you could choose the location for a future gig, where in the world would it be? Is there any place in the world that arouses your curiosity in general?
A: London!! there is something about that place that seems to have a strong association with dance music. there are so many djs and producers that i'm totally into that all originated in the UK. London being the central hub of the UK makes it a very attractive place to one day play.
Oren: What can we expect from you production-wise? "Open Day" and "Blend 43" were both amazing, and soon a new single will be featured in Markus Schultz's new CD.
A: i want to start writing more breaks and twisted stuff. andy page, luke chable, keltec and mangan, habersham, kosmas epsilon, ozgur can, the Holland crew (Dekay, sander k etc.).. these are all guys that are going nuts! i Love their stuff. the stuff they are doing is great and its definitely influencing the direction i wish to take. I'm still about 2 months off being back at my computer so we shall see what happens. The new single is called Sublimate, i have done a breaks mix of it as well. Its the first breaks mix i have done that i am happy(ish) with. i think it will be out later this year on Coldharbour records, which is under the Armada Music group :)
Oren: Luke Chable has been near your side in the early stages and still works alongside you; tell us, any word on him and what he taught you for instance?
A: I have been very lucky to be helped along by luke. i usually dont give records to anybody until lukes heard them and given me his feedback. he has taught me loads. His honest feedback is what mainly helps me out. If u give a record to a record label they just say "its not for us" and leave it at that. At least luke will tell me if my new tune suck ass hehe! i hope to be able to work with luke in the future on something original. but he's just luke and i look forward to kicking his ass at "call of duty" when i get over to holland in May (well he usually kicks my ass but its wishful thinking :P )
Oren: Is there anyone else you would like to work with in the future?
A: the melbourne crew :) would love to work with more of the boys from home in the future
Oren: What are your favorite tunes at the moment?
A: off the top of my head, no cd wallett in sight...and some of them i dont have yet... Petal - Wubble U (Sean Quinn vs. Luke Chable) (I wish I had it) Chable and Dirty 4's - Tokyo (I wish I had it) Dan Mangan - Little Snitch Rozbeh Delavari - La la la (Ozgur Can) Commie and Christian J - Scattered Thoughts Quest - Air/String Theory Phil K and Habersham - CloudBreak Kosmas Epsilon - Bitter Steve May - Sublimate (Breaks Mix) Pop Shuvit - Conversations (Shiloh mix) System 7 - Planet 7 (Holden) Shmuel - For A Long time (Orig/Fretwell) Sunset Squad - Tonfei
OMG so many i cant think right now, but there are 13 tunes I love J
Oren: What is the music scene missing in your opinion? Anything you think should be changed?
A: thats a tough one... I don't think anything is missing, but I think more and more people are going to start doing more live stuff. Some of my fav events are when people like nubreed or infusion are rocking out live. There is that next level of energy in the air J I looking forward to lostep album and tour that's for sure.
Oren: Before we finish, do you have any words of wisdom to tell our readers?
A: Stay in school kids :P
Thanks for your time Steve, keep them coming!
