Timo Maas' label has a new signing in Jr.W and it looks to be a busy April and May with the new Hyper single and a 2CD mix compilation on the way.
Jr.W – Play Dirty/Yo Daddy (Four Twenty Recordings)
Timo Maas’ is back with a vengence, just before the next Hyper single, which is out shortly and which will be massive according to some that have heard it. This is one of Timo’s new signing, he makes the typical Timo Maas sound like Locodice and others have done in the past, which is dirty, with more and more dirt thrown in for good measure. Sadly, not much is known about Jr.W, besides the fact that he deejays not far from Fabric on Saturday nights. So just before the big Hyper release, we have the new 4:20 release called Play Dirty/Yo Daddy. Also expect a mix album from Timo’s label with Clive Henry and Locodice sometime in May or June.
A1 – Play Dirty B1 – Yo Daddy
A1 - Play Dirty
Now if press releases were anything to go by, then this has incredible promise because when I hear the words “Sleazy Vocal”, I tend to get all warm and fuzzy inside because Four Twenty has been responsible for some nasty vocals over the years, especially Locodice’s Phatt Dope Shit, which ranks near the top of the nastiest vocals of all time. So I start Play Dirty and it has that other 4:20 hallmark, a nasty and hypnotic bassline, with some robot voices and some electro lines. The vocal line ain’t really that dirty, I hate when labels give me false hope! But I love the sound effects that just give this release, some downright filthyness. The vocal talks about money, money, I suppose that’s what I want, which really makes no sense but in music, they are not supposed to. The bass that comes with the vocal is really nice but sadly the track wears on you and there is nothing earth shattering here.
Yo Daddy
It starts with a vocal, which is aided by nothing, then 10 seconds later, you hear an echo, then about 10 seconds after that, the bassline with an infectious groove gets going. The rest of the track is the vocal working with the nasty bassline but much props for naming a song “Yo Daddy”. The record is not exactly one for the peaktime but it is certainly an excellent warmup record or one for the first hour of the main set. The song is really just ordinary and I find it hard to see what Timo Maas saw in this, I’m not saying it is a bad record, it is really quite decent but it is nothing earth shattering here. I’ve heard better from 4:20 and I’ll wait till the 2nd volume of the Ibiza mix compilation, this year mixed by Clive Henry and Locodice, that should be really dirty.
Conclusion:
Both records could work well under the right circumstances but I don’t think they are that filthy and I expect better from Timo Maas’ label but this should tie you over till the next Hyper single is released in the next month and it is supposed to be huge!
