Rennie Pilgrem returns with full release for one of the singles off his Fall 2004 album. Gladiator gets the full remix treatment this time and the results are just off the hook!

Rennie Pilgrem – Gladiator (TCR)

Rennie Pilgrem just keeps going and going and for the bald headed nutter, that’s all he wants. With his label looking towards the new JDS album, which is supposed to be huge and him getting honored for Outstanding Contribution to Breakbeat Music at Breakspoll 2005. Congrats to him for pushing Breaks for so long and finally get his do from the Breaks Massive. After the success of this album from last year called “Pilgremage”, the TCR office kept getting pestered by people who wanted them to release “Gladiator” as a single, so finally Rennie Pilgrem looked at his label Manager Pippa and said enough is enough, let’s get it remixed and released. He even added his Emit Beat into one of the remixes + Chris Carter joining in on guitar on one of the beats. So without further ado

Rennie Pilgrem – Gladiator (TCR) (RENN3094)

1.Radio Mix
2.Full Length Gonzo Mix
3.Hi8 Mix
4.Exclusive Unreleased Mix
5.Original Version

1.Radio Edit

Who knew something so short, could be so powerful?, it has more driving bass than the original mix, coupled with the fiercer driving electric guitar riff, that makes this such an instant favorite. The rant comes in quickly and it never bores me, a taxi driver ranting about techno is bullshit and how rock n roll will never die. The song shortened for the radio airwaves is just completely nasty and that guitar never tires or gets bored, more of this stuff please!

2.Full Length Gonzo Mix

No, this is not your favorite character from Jim Henson’s the Muppets but that would have been even funnier, if that had happened. Gonzo is actually Rennie himself, helped out by Chris Carter, also an artist on TCR. This starts off differently here, with the rant altered into a robotic voice, he is talking about Run and then something that I’m not sure about. The drums then enter and they are followed by Chris Carter’s heavy electric guitar, which replaces the riffs, this is quite simply a monsterous mix. Rennie Pilgrem is certainly not missing anything, he is going for broke and holding nothing back. Now the Emit beat enters, it was so nice of Rennie to add his famous remix beat to this already huge remix. To top this off, Rennie brings back the rant in its original form, which has completely knocked me off my chair. This is sure to cause mayhem in clubs in future months and if you thought that Pilgrem and co. could not improve on Gladiator, you were dead wrong.

3.Hi8 Mix

I’m not sure who Hi8 are, but this mix goes in a more electrofied direction. It starts with electronic drum sequences and some breakbeats but it has that real nasty electro direction, which I like. The rant is chopped up at times, with a grinding bass backing it. The track is certainly bass heavy, watch them bassbins folks. The tune uses more of the bass to drive it and then the breakdown uses more synths that just puts this into a different league. The grinding nature of this remix might put a few people off but I think it is mean and nasty, just how I like my music to sound.

4.Exclusive Unreleased Mix

I like to call this “The Funk Mix” because they added a lot of funk and because they have not really named it anything besides calling this an unreleased mix. This starts with some real old skool flav, with a female going “Uh” and a male going “Uh” in the background. This mix relies heavily on the original grinding riff + some weird synth work but it gets you moving. It also makes use of a female vocal sample, not the taxi driver rant, which made it so much fun. I like this because it gives something to everyone but this might scare some people but props to Rennie for giving you something new.

5.Original Mix

What do I need to say about the original mix, it uses a great rant driven by some nasty filthy bass and a grinding riff. I loved it back when the album came out and I still love it now.

Conclusion:
Head straight for the Gonzo Mix, that should satisfy the breakbeat addicts and the bass addicts. As usual TCR outdoes itself again and some could be tired of me saying the same thing but when you keep pushing quality and it rocks, you get massive props. Well done again to TCR, they just keep pushing solid release after solid release. Note to TCR, more like the Gonzo remix please!, it is definitely one to watch for.
