The fourth release on this label comes from the duo Angel Ace & Oscar L, who have brought the Serenade alias to life with the intention to bring us two pieces of uplifting trance... Did they succeed?
Ángel Acebrón and Óscar López have worked together using the Serenade alias before, releasing the tune 'Serenade' on the Spanish Pulsar label. Though there are also a bunch of releases by the guys which seem to have been made individually, it looks like they mostly co-produce their tracks in order to gain maximum performance.
'Aura' was first played from CDR back in June '04 by Armin van Buuren in his radioshow, and is now finally released... Let's check it out!
A-side: Aura Things immediately shart to shapen up by using a fierce kickdrum backed by a rolling set of basses. The build contains a lot of different elements like chilled synth sounds and a very nice guitar, but a few of the high synth melodies have just been used too much these days. Anyway, can't blame them for that, because the way in which the guitar has been used is rather cool; playing a simple rhythm at its entrance, it slowly evolves into a more full melodic experience throughout the track. Seems like its time for some summer vibes, because the main break consists of the tight guitar melody backed by a somewhat uplifting range of violin-strings at the background. All this made me think about chilling out during them hotter days, enjoying a cold drink while listening to some approperiate music. The main riff has this slightly emotional feeling to it to complete the package, resulting in a nice tune overall. Although this one will certainly suit the dancefloors, I think it also works in a very neat way when you just want to relax and listen to some cheerful melodic trance. Quite cool! Rating: 7/10
B-side: Illusion Time to turn the vinyl 180 degrees and head on to this track! Right from the start, you will hear that this has a few key elements which have been used in 'Aura' as well. The bassdrum sounds a lot alike, and some of the synths seem to be taken over as well in a different form. Progressing, building, enhancing and flowing, the track has a slightly faster feel to it than the A-side. Agile synth work, a kind of pitched wooshy sound at the background and the fast percs lead to a somewhat more tensed atmosphere, ready to guide us into the part where everything fades away and makes place for just a few of the tracks components... Time for some more acoustics, 'cause this time a tiny piano sample emerges right on top of the slow strings melody which is being played. With the beats kicking in again a quite nice drive is being created, but I can't refrain to say that it's all just a little too standard... We've heard this before! The production is good, the melodies are ok, but the overall sound has been used too many times now. Time for something new! Rating: 6/10
Conclusion:
While I like 'Aura' because of its very sunny, relaxing vibe and a nice use of the guitar, I found the B-side rather disappointing. Nevertheless, if you like your trance a bit melodic and chilled at the same time, don't forget to check this one out!
