JDS give you a taster of their forthcoming album with this single on TCR...
JDS – Jump Around/Detonate (TCR)
What a difference a year and half makes! JDS (Darren Pearce and Julian Napolitano) have gone from just a normal duo to breakbeat kings in that short time. JDS first caught the eyes of the music community with the single “Nine Ways” released on FFRR in 1997 but it was their single “Blackout” in 2003 on TCR that caught most of the world offguard. They were almost a one hit wonder at that point but ever since “Blackout”, they have been tearing apart dancefloors with their music and enjoying their new found status as Breakbeat Kings. “Blackout” to put it mildly was simply massive, they have followed it up with bombs like “Purple Funky Monkey”, which was infectious and a true dancefloor destroyer. Their new album is completely finished and should be out in Mid May on TCR, this writer has already heard it and it is simply massive but that’s another review for another day. So they decided to release a 12”, that contains two tracks off the new album and to give you a taste of what is to come, the tracks are called “Jump Around” and “Detonate” to get you in the mood for the new album called “Adventures of the Purple Funky Monkey”. So without further ado, here is the review for Jump Around/Detonate
JDS – Jump Around/Denotate (RENN3095) (TCR)
A1 – Jump Around B1 – Detonate B2 – Jump Around (Edit)
A1 – Jump Around
It starts with claps, you gain this really groovy feeling. The drums start to join in with some weird “Wah” sample in the background and then it gets going with this evil riff that is used. The bassline then becomes heavy and thick and the song starts to gain life, it does remind you of the Plump DJ’s style at times because it is what I like to term “Jump Up Breaks”, which is just energetic breakbeat. The female vocal sample that is thrown in, is a black lady saying “Jump Around, so your body can groove”, I’m not a big fan of it but it does add some spice to the track. The bassline coupled with the sound effects is the biggest draw and I wish there was a dub mix because I think the track is fine without a vocal. The track is not as powerful as “Purple Funky Monkey” nor “Blackout” but it seems to get you moving, even thought I loathe the vocal. The way that JDS use sound effects is another plus here because they don’t give you a plain track and hope you like it, they throw in sound effects plus a variety of other things to enhance the tune. You may like it and so do I but I just don’t enjoy the vocal.
B1 – Detonate
This is different than “Jump Around”, this heads for the techy breakbeat area. Apparently Meat Katie played this at HUM and the entire dancefloor was destroyed. This just starts with the drumline, then a solid riff that is hard to describe, easiest way was an altered siren. This starts slowly but once it gets going, look out, this is nasty techy breaks and the groove that underlies this track is amazing. During the track, JDS use a variety of percussion, they are a steel drum, then they couple two drums together at times, which gives it a thick bassline. I love this because of the sound effects and the percussion is just what pushes the track here. The other thing I like is the subtle nature of this track because it is not in your face like “Jump Around”.
B2 – Jump Around (Edit)
Obviously since this is an edit, the track starts quickly and I realize how much I do like the track but without the vocal. The track is energetic and uses that evil riff to drive it but the vocal just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. It will do some damage on the dancefloor, that’s certain but the vocal does nothing for me.
Conclusion:
Solid tracks from JDS’ forthcoming album, out sometime in May. I like Detonate more than Jump Around and the only thing that hurts Jump Around is the vocal. Look out for JDS’ album, it will be the talk of the music world, when unleashed to the world in May or June on TCR.
12" is out now, Adventures of the Purple Funky Monkey should be out in May or June, keep your eyes peeled to TCR's website as well as this one, for the most uptodate information.
