Newcomers Charles and Kling deliver their first release, with a mix from Habersham that got picked up on Therapy Sessions 2.

Charles and Kling – Parallel Realities (Mixturi Recordings 001)

Mixturi Management is a name that is probably unknown to about seventy five percent of the people out there but the labels that it manages, is not unknown. They manage Blueprint, Existence Records, Lobotomy, Institution, Pangea UK, CP Recordings, Winds West and a few others. Mixturi decided that it was time to get their own label started and this is what they have done, so the first Mixturi Recordings 001 is Charles and Kling’s Parallel Realities.

Charles and Kling are newcomers to the scene in terms of releases, this is their first on any label. Phil Charles and Matt Kling are originally from the city of brotherly love aka Philadelphia, USA. This was picked up immediately by Mixturi after hearing it and then they picked Habersham, who seems to be doing nothing wrong these days to do the remix. Habersham’s mix was so good, that Luke Chable immediately signed for his disc on the Therapy Sessions 2 CD (that he did with Dave Seaman) out on Renaissance in the UK and Thrive in the USA.

Charles and Kling – Parallel Realities (Mixturi Recordings 001)

Side A – Original Quantum Mix
Side B – Habersham’s Git Er Dun Mix

Side A – Original Quantum Mix

This starts banging, which is always a good thing, with the heavy tribal drums and heck I’m already dancing. Some snares roll in about half a minute later and then the evil sound effects that give this such a dark tone join in. The track is not quite tribal and not quite progressive but it is dark and devastating. The sample “Be yourself” is filtered and pushed near the back and it appears every so often. The record is quite odd at times but it certainly gets you moving and the sound effects just add to the nasty tone that the record has taken. About two and half minutes in, a female sample talking about “parallel things” comes in and then it goes back straight to the drums. The drums really give this song, some life and the sound effects add to the nasty dark sensation. This screams out as a John Digweed record all the way and in his hands during a set, watch out people!. The tune really does not stray too much from its original direction of a pumping progressive-tribal hybrid. The breakdown is even weirder because the drums are changed and some weird sci-fi noises come in, so it is effect galore for a while and no drums, which is a nice change. This continues for some time, till another female vocal sample comes in then it goes more into a dark progressive mode, with some drums but nothing like what it started out. This feels like two records in one. Certainly a nasty slice of whatever genre, you wish to label it from Charles and Kling.

Side B - Habersham's Git Er Dun Mix

Now Luke Chable immediately picked this up, supposedly after hearing it only once for his mix on Therapy Sessions volume 2 (done with Dave Seaman). The remixer is the man known as Habersham, who seems to be everywhere these days, with a lot of new releases. This starts very slowly compared with the original mix, it starts with a few drum hits and some echoed sound effects that gives it a eerie feeling. The Habersham mix is much slower and uses a lot of quirky sound effects and its not as in your face as the original quantum mix. The backing beat here reminds me of flat eric at times for some reason, it is funny that music always reminds you of something at times. The sample is used here but it is cut up and the sound effects really drive it. It takes about three and half minutes for this song to gain any life, with a hooky riff that builds and just takes over but the first three would bore you to death, hopefully the deejay will just start it at two and half minutes. I don’t find it that incredibly interesting here but it does catch your interest at times. Habersham goes for the dark progressive breaks influence here but I find progressive breaks to have gone incredibly boring at times. The mix is not that bad but forget this side and stick with the A side, you won’t be disappointed.

Conclusion:
The Original Mix totally crushes the Habersham mix and why Chable picked it, I do not know but Charles and Kling deliver a solid record. Mixturi’s first record is a winner, the strength of the A side totally outweighs any problem that the B Side might present
