A new force in Ambient music has arrived and his name is Marvin Ayres. If Mixmaster Morris says you got talent, then you must be doing something right. Check out the review!

Marvin Ayres – Cellosphere (Burning Shed)

Chilled Album of the Month for April 2005

Marvin Ayres is one of those unknown names that is easily coming into his own in Ambient music. Pete Namlook, Higher Intelligence Agency and Biosphere are the big names in the Ambient scene but certain artists like Maitreya and others have been trying to craft out a name in the scene for years. Marvin Ayres was born in the UK and he has been helping out artists for yrs, “Simply Red”, “Culture Club” and “Frankie Goes to Hollywood” among some names. A few years later, he signed with Mills Plateaux (Avant Garde Label) and has continued to release a variety of things over the last few years. Even the legendary Mixmaster Morris had high praise for him. So this is Cellosphere

Marvin Ayres – Cellosphere (Burning Shed)

1.Cellosphere
2.Harmonic
3.Jeannie
4.Sensory (Bonus Track)

The album is only four tracks long and clocks in at nearly fourty nine minutes. What hits you immediately with the start of Cellosphere, is how easy it is to listen to. Most Ambient works are incredibly complex and take a lot of patience at the best of times but this just glides in. It is incredibly lush with a multitude of layers upon layers, but what is so apparent here, is how easy it is on the ears. This is incredibly calming and incredible surreal at times. The warm textures here catch my attention, nothing ice cold like Biosphere’s work or Bobby Bird’s Higher Intelligence Agency. This is ambient for the non ambient lover and it also strikes you how easy Ayres is making this sound and making this seem. Cellosphere is a careful slow journey into aural bliss and I love this style of Ambient, nothing incredibly complex and the easiness on my ears is a welcome change.

Harmonic is the shortest track on here, clocking in under four minutes, the rest of the tracks are over ten minutes. Harmony is the easiest way to describe it, the track starts slowly with sounds filtering in but it still strikes me at how accessible this music is. Harmony takes you on a ride into space and the music is not just for people who understand a great deal about Ambient music. Anyone can dig the warm textures surrounded by the oasis of sound that surrounds you when you listen to it.

Jeannie is the longest track here, probably clocking in at over twenty minutes. Most people will complain, a track can’t be twenty minutes because it will be too long, well the track is as long as the artist wants it to be and if they can hold your attention for the entire twenty minutes like “Jeannie” then more props to them. “Jeannie” is a beautifully crafted and brilliantly thought out track, Ayres easily moves through this track as it were four minutes. You don’t notice the length here, you notice how easy, Ayres is making this sound and making this look. I’ve stated for many years that it takes a truly open mind and patient one to get into Pete Namlook’s work but this is just so easy to listen to. This will gain a lot of fans in the people who need things to just chill out to, after a hard day at the office and this will easily do it. The warm textures just send your mind into a calm state, which is the goal of this CD. I love it for its easy listening ability because after a hard day at work, it is hard to get into an Ambient CD and then chillout but you just hit play with this CD and you are instantly transported into a world of calm. The melody, the harmony all come together so effortlessly and it feels so good when you listen to this CD.

The last track is called “Sensory” and it is probably the best of the ones on this CD. I love how Ayres uses a Cello and a Violin in tandem to obtain an expansive sound that just is so beautiful and wonderfully crafted. This just pushes a sound but it does not try to hit you over the head, it reminds me of my classical CDs at times because of how well the Cello and Violin are used. The power that this song possesses is just unreal and listening to it, just instantly transports you into a world of calm. I like how he did not use electronic software completely as some artists do, it is refreshing to hear real instruments for a change. Just a nice way to end off a CD.

Conclusion:
Mixmaster Morris was right when he said that Marvin Ayres was good but I feel that was an understatement. This is so good that any Ambient fan or curious person about music to relax to, should buy this album immediately. It is beautiful, warmly crafted, it contains a lot of brilliantly crafted harmonic moments that just take you to another place. Pure genius on the part of Ayres and if he keeps making albums like this, look out Namlook and Biosphere, you have competition on your hands.
